He was known by the courtesy title of Viscount Trentham from birth. Then as Earl Gower when his grandfather another George Granville Leveson-Gower was created 1st Duke of Sutherland on 28 January 1833, and Marquess of Stafford, when his father succeeded as the 2nd Duke of Sutherland on 19 July 1833. His father also succeeded his mother, Elizabeth Sutherland, Countess of Sutherland, as 20th Earl of Sutherland
in 1839, and then on 12 May 1841, took by royal licence the name of Sutherland before that of Leveson-Gower.
He m.(1) Anne Hay-Mackenzie, Countess of Cromartie, daughter of John Hay-Mackenzie and Anne Gibson-Craig, on 27 June 1849 at Cliefden House, Taplow, Buckinghamshire, England and (2) Mary Caroline Mitchell, daughter of Reverend Richard Mitchell, on 4 March 1889. He died on 22 September 1892 at age 63.

Lady Alexandra Sutherland-Leveson-Gower b. 13 Apr 1866, died 16 April 1891 at Argyll Lodge, Kensington, Middlesex, England. Her will was proved on 17 July 1891, by her brother Cromartie, at that time Marquess of Stafford.[2]
