Biography

Samuel Lewis was born August 18, 1648, in Hartford, Conn. He was the son of William Lewis and Mary Hopkins. He married, first, Elizabeth ---, who died in 1705 or 1706 in Farmington (ref?). According to Cook's Pioneer Lewis Families, she was Elizabeth Judd, possibly the daughter of John Judd,[1]. However, have not seen convincing proof of this. It appears more likely that this Elizabeth was Elizabeth Orton, daughter of Thomas Orton of Farmington.[2] Samuel's second wife was Mary ----- (the record says "unsure of children's mother". But fair bet if the kids were born after 1st wife died, they were 2nd wife's kids)[1] Samuel Lewis was a sergeant in the militia and was made a freeman in 1676.[3]

He died before February 1, 1725/6, when administration of his estate was granted to his widow Mary and eldest son, Samuel. Administration records mention only Hannah Gridley and sons Samuel, John, Nehemiah, Nathan and Josiah; the other children had probably died by that time. In June 1726, Samuel asked the court for extra money for serving his father seven years after the age of 21, but this was "resisted" by his mother and not approved by the court.[4]
