Biography

Edward Lewis, born about 1636, was one of the sons of John Lewis. The family emigrated from Wales to the Colony of Virginia in the mid-1600s, and became a prominent settler family of that colony.

Much less is known about Edward than about his brother John Jr. There are land records, the record of him coming over with the other Lewis family members, and birth and marriage records for his daughter, Elizabeth Lewis Taylor.

Edward's mother is often thought to be Lidia, as she was listed in their arrival documents and assumed to be John's wife. However, it's not been proven who exactly Lidia was, and there's no evidence that she was married to John or what her origins were, so this is quite uncertain.

In about 1660, Edward is believed to have wed Mary Morgan, and they raised their family in Virginia.

Edward Lewis, along with Thomas Robinson, received a land grant of 1,140 acres in Rappahannock County on 20 Feb 1662.[1]

Edward died in 1698.

2023 12 8 Suggest you all take a look at John Lewis of 1594, and the other 2 Johns also. Edward is the son of John who was born in 1594. Edward has a brother named John (number 2 of Johns) There are at least 3 Colonel, Major, Councilor who was a Major, then a Captain who was promoted to a Major. I have updated the most the main line of men from 1594 to 2023 who are in my family lines. Lewis, Harrelson, George Washington, West, Norris, Piver/Jarrell, and there is a complete. DNA all over. The will of Humphrey Booth of Nov 1665 in Rappahannock County mentions a bequest to "Edward, the son of Edward Lewis" of two cows. In the book The Welsh Lineage of John Lewis (1592-1657), Emigrant to Gloucester, Virginia by Grace McLean Moses, publ. 2009 by Genealogical Publishing Company, p. 6, the author deduces that Edward married a daughter of Humphrey Booth and had a son Edward.

Is there a marriage record of Edward Lewis and Mary Morgan (spouse presently attached)?

Many sources state that Edward had five daughters and one son, who had no heirs. The book on the Freshwater Families by Clara Edelblute, and Ralph & Harold Freshwater states: "Edward Lewis acquired land which fell into Richmond County upon its formation in 1692. This descended to his only son who died without issue and without a will in 1704/5 and this real estate in North Farnham Parish became the property of his five sisters all of whom had married prior to this date. His five sisters: Johanna married William Linton of Westmoreland Co.; Mary married Christopher Pridham ((16??-1731) (I believe she married again); Ann married 1700 Thomas Jasper/Jesper (he was my ancestor); Elizabeth married Simon Taylor (my ancestors); Katherine married Joseph Deeke (16??011718. This profile has been attached to Mary Morgan, so she now has three husbands named Edward Lewis. :)

There are no sources attached here. But this profile has a father of Edward Sr, whereas the others, correctly, have John as their father. We have *many* John and Edward Lewis profiles in this location and timeframe, so it's easy to incorrectly attach. Either this Edward has the wrong father and is a duplicate of the others, or he is a different person who should not be attached as Mary's husband.

Can you confirm any sources for this? Otherwise we need to detach him from Mary. Thanks!

Lewis-3564 and Lewis-1114 do not represent the same person because: These profiles are linked to different sets of parents. Lewis Patriarchs indicates an Edward Lewis attached to both family lines so these likely represent two different people.

there is no documentation of any relationship between this profile and the father that is listed.

In "Lewis Patriarchs" listed above, the father John Lewis (Lewis-241) does have a son named Edward listed.

However, a merge is being looked at for this profile (Lewis-1114) and Lewis-3564. These two have different parents and both fathers are a John Lewis. So it needs to be determined which John he belongs to. There may indeed be two Edwards which would make merging inappropriate but correct parents need determined for all.

It does appear this Edward (my ancestor is his daughter Elizabeth Lewis Taylor) is more likely the son of John Lewis and Margaret Perkins Lewis. Will examine further.

Lewis-4645 and Lewis-1114 appear to represent the same person. This profile is lacking info to compare, but the family relationships indicate it's the same person. (Merge of fathers has already been proposed.)

I'm working on sorting through these Lewis profiles for the Southern Colonies project. Could you review and approve the merge? Thanks!

Hint 409: Marriage to duplicate person

Unmerged match for a very long time, please have a look. One of the mothers may need to be removed so merge can continue.
