From the records of the Philadelphia MM, Memoirs concerning many persons Eminent for Piety and Virtue among People in America Called Quakers, Ellis Lewis from the Newark MM, Kennett Square, Philadelphia:[1]
Ellis Lewis was born in North Wales and landed in Pennsylvania about the year 1708 and being married, he settled in Kennet in 1716, was chose an Elder for that meeting in 1726 continuing in that station until 1747 when he removed to Wilmington. Said friend was serviceable to the society in divers respects many years, being one of a good understanding , very active in the discipline of the church being rightly gifted for it, and often concerned to reconcile differences, mostly with good success, until age & weakings rendered him incapable of such service. He died the 21s of 6th mo: 1750 in the 7oth year of his age, and was buried in Kennet burying ground.

Ellis was born near Dolgelly Merionethshire, Wales in the year 1680. His father died when he was very young and his mother married Owen Roberts. About 1698 Owen Roberts and his family including stepson Ellis Lewis, made preparations to embark for Pennsylvania and their goods were already on the ship that was to carry them to Penn's colony in America. Sickness in the family prevented them from leaving and their goods crossed the ocean without them.
When Ellis Lewis reached a mature age, he removed to Ireland, and from their embarked for Pennsylvania, bringing a certificate from a Friends Meeting at Mount Mellich, Ireland, dated 5mo. 13, 1708. On arriving in Pa, he stayed with his cousins, family of Rowland Ellis, who had not yet removed from Haverford.
He later took up his residence in Kennett, Chester Co., and was for many years an esteemed Elder of Kennett Meeting, removing later to Wilmington, Delaware, where he died 6mo. 31, 1750. [2]

Ellis Lewis married twice; (first) at Concord Meeting, Chester county in 1713 to Elizabeth Newlin, dau. of Nathaniel Newlin, at Falls Monthly Meeting in Bucks County 1mo. 11, 1723, Mary Baldwin, a widow who survived him, but had no children by him. [2]
