Biography

Bethiah Lewis was born 4 November 1720 in Dedham, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of William Lewis and Bethia Colburne.[1]

Bethia married Ezra Morse on July 31, 1740 at Dedham.[2] Together they had 5 children:

  1. Ezra Morse b 17 Sep 1741, Dedham, Massachusetts d 9 May 1807 Sharon, Massachusetts m. Susan Guild
  2. Bethia Morse b 12 March 1744, Dedham, Massachusetts; d 11 May 1808 Francestown, New Hampshire. m Oliver Holmes
  3. Oliver Morse b 4 August 1748, Dedham, Masachusetts d ? 1 May 1803? m Sarah Pittee
  4. Sarah Morse b 15 January 1751 Walpole, Massachusetts d before 1780. Married Oliver Fisher
  5. Priscilla Morse b 26 July 1755 in Walpole, Massachusetts. (No further information).

Ezra died 14 June 1755 and Bethiah was apointed administratrix of his modest estate, which was valued at about 57 pounds and included no real estate.[3]

She married Eleazer Everett on November 29, 1759 at Walpole.[4] Together they had 1 child:

  1. Eleazer Everett b 25 April 1761, Dedham, Massachusetts, d 21 December 1828. Married Lucy Battelle

Eleazer died 28 January 1786 at Dedham. September 9, 1791, she was dismissed by the Dedham Church to Francestown, New Hampshire.[5] Daughter Bethiah (Morse) Holmes and son Eleazer also removed to Francestown.

Bethiah passed away July 04, 1796 in Francestown, New Hampshire and is buried there in Francestown Cemetery #1.[6]

Errors to Avoid

There were several Bethiah Morse's who lived in Walpole/Dedham at this time. There are two death records for Bethia Morse in Walpole: Bethiah, wid., July 22, 1776 and Bethiah, Jan. 29, 1777. The 1776 death is Bethiah (Ruggles) Morse, widow of Obadiah and the 1777 death is for their daughter born in 1742. Bethia Morse (abt.1742-1777) The original death records in Walpole in that section are grouped by family, Obadiah, his widow and bethiah d 1777 are grouped with Susan Brackett who may also be a married daughter.

There is no question that Bethiah Lewis is the Bethiah Everett buried in Francestown, and not one of the Bethiah Morses who died in Walpole. In her father's (William Lewis’s) probate, Bethiah is referred to as Bethiah Everett, the wife of Eleazer Everett.[7] Also, the age listed on the headstone (76) is a close match for her 1720 birth date.
