Biography

John Lewis,[1] the immigrant ancestor, was born in England about 1613 based on his estimated marriage. His parents and origins are unknown. He migrated by 1634 and settled first among the earliest at Charlestown, Massachusetts. By 1652, he removed from there to Malden, Massachusetts. He was made a freeman 6 May 1646.[1][2]

He married first Margeret ______. Margerite Lewis died at Malden, 10 April 1649.[3][1] John was admitted to the Charlestown Church 10 Sep 1644.[4]

John Lewis died in Malden, Sept 1657, according to the printed vital records in Malden,[3]or 16 Sep 1657, according to Bonds Watertown Genealogies, [6][7] or October 1657 stated in his inventory.[1][8][9]

Thanks Ann. If information is found confirming John son of Edward is the immigrant of this profile we can connect and merge the profiles.

He may well be as there isn’t any trace of him marrying or being buried.

I think he is a distinct possibility, Will have a will search. Ann

Ronald, in "old style" dating the 3rd month is actually May, right? So he was married 3 May 1683, wasn't he?

Update - it looks like there was a typo in the original comment, they married in the 2nd month which I agree would be April.

John's son Samuel married Sarah Dutton on 3 Apr 1683 in Billerica, Middlesex, MA.

The original record actually read, "3 - 2 - 83". Since they used the old calendar, that would make it 3 Apr 1683 as was shown in the transcription. So. the transcription was correct.

John Lewis married Marguerite Unknown-7723 before or about 1638. Samuel Lewis was born in 1641. Marguerite died on 10 Mar 1649. John married Mary Brown on 10 Apr 1650. So Samuel is the son of Marguerite, not Mary Browne.

I don't think Samuel's profile manager can change it because this is a Project profile. I tried to edit it but got the message that it had to be approved by a Puritan Great Migration Project manager.

There is no record of a John Lewis born in Eastbourne, Sussex, England in 1613. There is a John Lewis baptised in 1603 in Eastbourne, but there is no documentation of that person going to Charlestown, Massachusetts Bay Colony in or before 1634. Please remove the place of birth for this profile.

Since we don't know where John Lewis was born, we cannot say he was born in England. He could have been born in Wales, Ireland or Scotland... or elsewhere.

I see no indication/evidence /sources that the parents listed Lewis-595 and UNKNOWN-11510 belong to this immigrant. Objections to disconnecting? or Sources?

Michael, you've got a batch of profiles here with no birth dates-- even estimated-- in the birth fields; could you please add them? Empty birth fields make searching and finding matches near impossible. Thank you so much.
