Biography

Rebecca Lewis was possibly the first wife of James Jones of Charles City and Prince George Counties. However, Boddie does not discuss his first wife other than to state that James was married twice, and to acknowledge a possible relationship to Christopher Lewis, "perhaps through James Jones' first wife, whose name is otherwise unknown."[1]

They were married about 1659 in Charles City County, Virginia,[citation needed] or about 1660 in Virginia.[citation needed] They produced 10 children.[citation needed]

Children

Based on James' Will[2] dated 6 April 1719, their children included:

Disputed Children

Other children may have included:

  • William Jones—his profile states there is no evidence to suggest William is the son of James Jones.
  • Daniel Jones—his profile notes Daniel is not listed in James' Will, and that there was a Daniel Jones of James City County who was possibly James's father.

Research Notes

Charles City County, Virginia was created in 1634 as one of the eight original shires. The shires were immediately referred to as "Counties".

Prince George County, Virginia was created in 25 Aug 1702 from Charles City County.

The profile Lewis-14411, Sarah Rebecca (Lewis) Jones (abt.1642-), was merged into this profile on 29 Mar 2022. Based on the then-listed marriage date, that profile appeared to represent the first wife of James Jones. It listed the following alternative facts:

  • Her name was Sarah Rebecca Lewis. However, Sarah is clearly the name of James's second wife, who wrote a letter[2] to the Court concerning her bequest from his estate on 20 Apr 1719.
  • She was born about 1642. No source provided.
  • They were married in 1665 Prince George County, Virginia. No source provided. But Prince George County did not exist in 1665.

At the time of that merge, the birth date of this profile was listed as about 1650, and was also unsourced. This birth date is clearly inconsistent with their marriage date (about 1659) and the birth date of their daughter Elizabeth (1660). Her birth date was therefore reestimated about 1643 based on James' birth date of about 1640.

The death date of before 6 Apr 1719 is based on the date James executed his Will. But she almost certainly died much earlier, as James was married to Sarah (Unknown) Jones (abt.1644-aft.1719) on that date.

Another source shows her death place as Prince George County, Virginia. But if she was James Jones's first wife, she probably died before Prince George County was created in 1702. The marriage to his 2nd wife Sarah is listed as about 1691.

Lewis-14411 and Lewis-1192 appear to represent the same person because: Both have the same mother, who only married once, so they share the same father, too.

Also, a birthdate of 1650 would make her only ten years old when she gave birth to Elizabeth.
