Biography

This profile was written by Allan Thomas

Joseph was born in Screven County, Georgia (part of which became Bullock County). Land records show he owned land there from 1793 to 1811. He was the son of Rev Joseph Benjamin & Sarah Elizabeth Magee. He married the daughter of Rev Benjamin & Sarah Morris.

In 1813 Joseph Lewis, at the age of 15 came from Georgia to Pike county with his father, [[Lewis-3129 | Joseph Benjamin Burton Lewis (1763 - 1845).

His farm was three miles south of Tylertown where the town of Lexie, on the old New Orleans & Great Northern railroad is.

Joseph Lewis became a Baptist minister in charge of the old New Zion Baptist church in the southeastern portion of the county. He was succeeded by his son, Little Joe Lewis. Little Joe Lewis, which position he resigned during the civil war and emigrated to Texas.

His farm was three miles south of Tylertown where the town of Lexie, on the old New Orleans & Great Northern railroad is located.

1822, He married Sarah Elizabeth Morris, daughter of Benjamin Morris and Sarah Bolton, immigrants from South Carolina in the territorial period of Mississippi. They had 9 children.
