Lydia was born about 1800. Her baptism of 25 July 1800 names both her parents, William and Mary Lewis, residents of Buckle Street. It took place at St Mary Whitechapel in Tower Hamlets, which is in East London.[1]
Lydia married twice.
1. First husband and father to her children was Thomas Barwell.
Thomas Barwell (bachelor) married Lydia Lewis (spinster) on 14 Aug 1823 at the church of St Dunstan and All Saints in Stepney, East London. Marriage no. 332. Both were recorded as being "of this parish". Marriage was "by banns". Witnesses were Harriot Barwell, and Ithiel Price. Harriot appears to be the sister of Thomas. Ithiel was someone who witnessed other weddings on the same and adjacent pages. Curate was Evan James. They all signed their own names.[2]
Banns were read on the 10th of August 1823.
2. Second husband was to Robert Taylor.
This marriage was recorded in both the parish church records of Stepney St Thomas in Mile End, and also in the new Civil Registration records which started in 1837.
The church record no. 444 identifies her clearly because she was using her first husband's surname but her father William Lewis (deceased) is also named.[3]
Robert Taylor married Lydia Barwell by banns on 24th July 1866. They were described widower and widow, of full age, and both residents of Stepney. Under "rank or profession", Robert was described as a gentleman. One of the witnesses was Elizabeth Mills. The other Thomas Hickman.
England and Wales, Civil Registration Marriage Index 1837-1915. Year 1866 July -Aug-Sep. Registration District Mile End Old Town. Inferred County London, Volume 1, PGE 1059. Lydia Barwell and Robert Taylor.
Robert's son Robert John Taylor and Lydia's daughter Susan Harriet were married in New Zealand on landing there.
It is presumed after their children married that Robert and Lydia and Thomas met up with each other, and when both were widowed Robert and Lydia began dating.
In the 1871 census the following couple appears at 11 Gray Coat pl. in Westminster.
(However, in earlier censuses, Lydia Barwell was always shown as having been born about 1801, so she should have been about 70 in 1871.)
