Lewis-46423 and Lewis-15505 appear to represent the same person because: same spouse, same parents, same death date
posted by Jim Bass Jr.
Lewis-46423 and Lewis-15505 do not represent the same person because: because the one born in 1723 was a child of 8 years of age when he died
posted by Jan Van Kort
So, can we go ahead and merge the 2? or remove Gideon b. 1723 as a father of our James???
posted by L. Lewis
So why do people keep insisting upon merging bad data? The Gideon born in 1723 only shares the same name. He has different parents, different town, and different birthday and he died in 1731. What is there to merge? Please remove him. It could be he is a cousin to our Gideon, but he is not our Gideon, the father of James, and that fact should be what we should be concerned about.

On Ancestry.com there is a copy of a Quaker meeting logbook with notes attached to it that showed the Gideon born in 1723 died in 1731, a child. Someone who can figure out how to get that meeting book copied over to this forum should do so, so we can bring an end to this merge topic.

The Gideon b. 1723 has your name on it, not mine. I think it's a bad idea to remove or change somebody else's work.

I have been paying a fortune into research on this person. I live on SSI now, and can't pay for more research. I don't know how to remove the dead child Gideon, born 1723 from the tree. He does not appear in my tree when I look there.
posted by Jan Van Kort
So, if you leave him, all his children need to be included in Lewis-15505. How do you do that? It would just be easier to merge him and the children and be done with it, because he is obviously connected to the wrong family. You surely wouldnt merge him into the William and Lowry Lewis line, as the children would all be wrong, then we have a bigger mess than what is already here.....
posted by L. Lewis
The Lewis-46423 is incorrect. Right birthdate, wrong parents, wrong death date. I can't figure out how to remove him. I was able to remove Elvira as his mother and put in Lowry, but I can't replace his father with William Lewis. And of course this child did not grow up to have a wife and children.
posted by Jan Van Kort
I'm not sure either. We may need help on this to fix it. I did post the death info pics on his page. it's on the right column.

Jan - both profiles show a death date of 1812 and both have the same wife. If one of these people died at 8 yrs old, please update the incorrect profile. Thanks
posted by Jim Bass Jr.
What I know to be correct is the 1730 birthdate for the Gideon who married Nancy and they were the parents of the James Lewis who later became my ancestor.

The Gideon born in 1723 died as a child in 1731. He was born to a William and Lowry Lewis who attended the Chester meetings. I can't seem to fix this issue.

OK, I was able to make the two Gideons into the correct one for our family. they are both born in 1730 with same parents, Nathaniel and Elvira. So now they can be merged.
posted by Jan Van Kort
Ok, I will do that process. There is a William Lewis, JR. as Lewis-13857 that Gideon b. 1723 could be added to as a child. just an fyi...

Lewis-46423 and Lewis-15505 appear to represent the same person because: Jan, you will have to approve this merge....

I have pretty much exhausted my resources in searching for Gideon and his parents. The Gideon born in Chester is not my ancestor as he died at the age of 8 in 1731. The BigY DNA leads us to George Lewis born 1600 in Kent, England. We need to fill in the gap. Also, we may need to focus on CT or MA for Gideon and his parents instead of PA. When I can afford it I will pay for more research. I have no clue as to how to put documents from research into this media.

Hi Jan,

There are some different ways to include research documents in WikiTree. You can either link to them in the Biography or Sources section (by editing the profile and adding the URL, or link, to it). Or you can upload it by "uploading an image". Instead of uploading an image format (for example, JPEG file (.jpg) or PNG file (.png)), you can upload a PDF file. Depends on what you want to do, or how big the document is, or whether it should be stored here, or if you are fine with the document stored elsewhere.

I have had no success in copying url's or anything else from ancestry.com to any other media. Wikitree does not seem to want to make this possible, so I'll leave this "sourcing" issue up to those who can. I will add a note as to where data is and let someone else who knows how do it, do it.

It has been brought to my attention that the Gideon Lewis born in May 1723 as the son of William and Lowry Lewis as reported in the Chester Quaker meeting died in 1731 as reported in quaker meeting notes. Thereby, making the Gideon Lewis merge as incorrect, so now I suspect he was born in about 1730. DNA connects me to many of the surnames mentioned so far. So do thru-lines.

Perhaps, we can make a list and rule-out that which we know to be incorrect?

The wife of John Mulkey (1768-1850) was Polly Lewis, and they married about 1790 in Ashe County, North Carolina. I am a descendant and have heavy DNA links to Gideon Lewis and the Osborne family. Polly [Mary] is likely to be their daughter, rather than the Mary listed here. At Ancestry, my DNA matches to descendants of their children are as follows: Gideon, Jr., 10 matches, up to 25 cM; George, 2 matches, up to 23 cM; Isaac, 5 matches, up to 28 cM; Jane, 1 match, 16 cM; Sarah, 1 match, 18 cM; Elizabeth, 5 matches, up to 16 cM; and Nathaniel, 1 match, 13 cM. My Osborne matches are numerous --- lots of connections to descendants of Solomon Osborne of Pike County, KY. It also shows matches to 2 descendants of Mary (Lewis) Taylor, at 9 and 11 cM. Polly (Lewis) Mulkey's children were born between 1792 and 1815, making her born say around 1774. Based on these data, I would think that Mary (Lewis) Taylor was a sister, not a daughter of Gideon Lewis.

Is Polly even a valid name? I had always thought of it as a "nickname". Just like Sally and Sarah, although I do have twins elsewhere in my family with those two as birthnames. Are you saying the Mary born in 1779 should be named Polly? And she got married at about age 11? Please correct me with proper dates and names. I am discussing the children born to Gideon and Nancy, the couple who were married in 1763, Ashe, NC. These were my ancestors and I need my tree to be correct. No wishful thinking please. Other people depend upon correct data.
posted by Jan Van Kort
Later sources refer to her as Polly Lewis, but of course "Polly" was a nickname for Mary. Her youngest child was born in 1815, and she was married by 1790, so she was born say about 1773. In my earlier note I suggested 1774 (not 1779!). Either way, the Mary Taylor suggested as Gideon's daughter seems wrong. As I mentioned, I have strong Lewis and Osborne DNA matches. In 1790, Gideon Lewis lived six households away from James "Mulky," in the 10th company of Wilkes County, NC.

Also, are you saying that you or someone had a Big-Y or y-chromosome test that shows that your line (which is from Gideon) is the same as someone who descends from George Lewis who settled in Barnstable, MA? This is entirely possible. There was a migration pattern that went from New England to NJ, PA, then to NC. For example, this was Abraham Lincoln's male line. The Osbornes settled in Long Island, then went from NJ down to VA and NC.

could a spouse by the name of Lee Poe be correct? I don't seem to have a Mary Taylor in my ancestry.com tree. Plus I'm having severe issues with editing on this wikitree. Can't seem to get there from here.

Yes, my cousin Luana Lewis was able to get her brothers and some other direct-line cousins to do the Big"Y" on FTDNA. They are also members of the Lewis project which finds that Gideon Lewis descendants are not related to the James Lewis of Merriweather fame. The two families are distantly related with a 3 thousand year gap. Clearly puts the two families distant cousins back in the bronze-age as to when they shared the same father.

Ok, I have a sibling Mary to Gideon and a daughter Mary. Somehow they both seem to be Taylor. I don't think I can fix this problem

I think I got the Mary problem resolved

Paul- I agree with you totally on Mary Polly Lewis Taylor being a sister of Gideon SR.

Lewis-46423 and Lewis-15505 are not ready to be merged because: I think the Lewis who is proposed to have died in KY is most likely incorrect. Just in case someone finds this mans grave, then we'll have a better discussion. I suspect the Chester connection to be correct from all my research. This also may connect the Boones and the Other Lewis families together better.
