Because Jesse had fought for the US Army in Mexican War against the US in 1848 He felt a loyalty to the US Army which would be the same as the Union Army in the War between the States. He and his wife Mary Locke disagreed and argued for about a week before he left in 1858 to teach school in Missouri before he joined the war effort. While teaching school in Missouri He had an assistant named Penelope Collier who he latter married. Mary Locke Lewis and her two boys, Jesse Locke Lewis b abt 1852 and James Henry Lewis b.1856 moved to Texas after the war. Jesse Alvis wanted to stay with the family but Mary would have no part of his fighting for the union.
