Biography

LEWIS HENRY W. Farmer; Sec. 26; P. O. Creston; born in La Salle Co., Ill., Nov 13, 1845; came to Ogle Co. in 1854; he married Nov. 22, 1868, Martha Jane McIlvain; she was born in Washington Co., Pa., Jan. 10, 1849; they have four children --- Bernard, 13; Charley, 13; Nanie; Agnes; Mr. L. is a Democrat in politics; served in the U. S. Army, with Co. k, 92d Ill. Volunteer Infantry, for eighteen months, when he was honorably discharged; owns 80 acres of land in cultivation and good homestead.

According to the 1880 US Census for Dement, Ogle County, Illinois, Henry Lewis, Farmer of Dement, Ogle Co., Illinois, was living there with his wife, Martha, who kept house, their five children, Bernard, 11, who was attending school, Charles, 7, Nanette, 5, Agness, 3, and Henry, 4 months. Also living with the family was Margaret McIlvain, his widowed mother-in-law.[1]

Research Notes

There is a discrepancy in the ages of the two oldest sons of Henry and Martha Lewis. The county history reports them both as being 13-year-olds in 1878. (I chose to go with the Census ages.) The 1880 US Census two years later reports Bernard as being eleven and Charles as being seven. The History does not give ages for the two daughters, Nanette/Nanie and Agnes/Agness. At 4 months old, young Henry, Jr., was not born until 1880.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Henry by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Henry:
