Biography

Born at Gorham, Cumberland, Maine 1814. Sailor for a few years. Worked as a clerk in St. Louis, Missouri, 1840. Sympathetic toward Mormon sufferings in Missouri. Joined Church and ordained elder 1842. Mission to eastern states with George J. Adams to gather funds, 1843-44. Returned to St. Louis and worked for a publisher, 1844. Member of the 29th Quorum of Seventy. Married Emily Jennison Holman. Crossed plains to Utah, 1849. Called to be clerk of all the Seventies, 1849. Mission to southern Utah, 1850-51. Mission to China with Hosea Stout and Chapman Duncan, 1852-1854. Spent time at Hong Kong. Unable to speak language. British soldiers hostile. Representative in legislature, 1856-57. Probate judge of Iron County for ten years. Married Emma Bateman, 1877. Called to Harrisburg to raise cotton. Called to settle tax difficulties in settlements near Nevada border. Kept school at Panacha. Moved to Kanab, 1871. Commissioner. Worked in St. George Temple. Mission to San Juan, 1882. Appointed judge of that county. Hole-in-the-Rock. Moved to Taylor, Apache, Arizona. Returned to Kanab, 1891. Ordained a patriarch 1895, 1895. Counselor in Kanab Stake high priests quorum, 1896. (from: guide to Mormon Diaries & Autobiographies by Davis Bitton, 1930 p.212)
