Dick was born February 4, 1926, in Port Huron to Florence and Clayton Lewis (P.H.H.S. teacher).

Older brother Dr. H. Gregg Lewis and sister Edith Hanton are deceased.

Dick graduated from Port Huron High School in June, 1943.

He was married to Audrey McCaw from 1949 until 1967.

After working at Mueller Brass Co. Dick moved west to Colorado, Arizona and then to California where he spent the rest of his life. Resuming his education, Dick graduated from Long Beach City College in 1955 and from the University of Southern California with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1959. Dick established his long-term dental practice in Long Beach, retiring in 2001.

Dick did not sit on the sidelines. He was an activist. In dentistry, he promoted high standards of practice. He served as president and in other offices for of the Harbor Dental Society and the California Dental Association. Dick served the American Dental Association as second vice president and chairperson and member of several committees devoted to practice standards and dental education. In community service, Dick provided children's dental screening, free dental services, cancer education, member of the State Board of Dental Examiners, ombudsman for nursing facilities, member of a Los Angeles County Civil Grand Jury and in-home owner association affairs.

Dick married Martha Dee Thomas on September 15, 1968, forging an inseparable bond. They resided in Long Beach until 1993, then moved to Torrance.

Dee and Dick traveled extensively in the U.S. and abroad, visiting every continent except Antarctica.

Among their activities together, they enjoyed the theater, films, fine art, music, reading and socializing with friends and relatives.

Dick's personal enthusiasms included cooking and gardening.

Dick was special, a thoughtful, kind and generous man. All who knew him will remember being greeted with a captivating, ear-to-ear smile and a twinkle in the eye suggesting a groaner of a pun or a delicious secret to be shared.
