Biography

Benjamin Lewis, was born ca 1737 in Augusta County, VA and died 1817 in Augusta County, VA. He married Susannah Nickell 1768, (daughter of John Nickell and Barbara McCombe).

1758: Jan 5, Thomas Young, with consent of his father, Hugh Young, binds himself to Benjamin Lewis for three years to learn card waining.

1771 Nov: George Lewis Sr. and three sons, John, Benjamin and George, moved to Greenbrier on Muddy Creek. They lived near where it emptys into the Greenbrier River. George Lewis Jr married Susan Hackman; John married Phebe Viney and Benjamin married Susannah Nickell.

1771 Dec: Benjamin and Susannah were shopping at Matthew's Trading Post in Greenbrier. His brother,John was there and "old man" George Lewis, presumably their father, was buying such necessities as "linseyn" cloth, knife and rum. Benjamin bought paper, pins, rum, tobacco, comb, knife and bed tyck". They are the only Lewis' listed in the old store ledger (i. e. Benjamin, George & John).

1794: Benjamin and Susannah moved to Kanawha Co.,VA, the part that later became Mason County, WV, in 1804.

1784 Jul they sold 377 A in Greenbrier Co. for 300 lbs. known as Lewis' Ferry. Also on 31 Jul 1794 they sold 38 A including the boat landing.

1796 31 Aug: Benjamin and Susannah sell for 310 lbs., land on Sewell Creek, on Meadow River, 1000 A in Greenbrier Co.,land purchased of Samuel McClung

1808 6 Sep: William Clendennin, Samuel McClung, John McClullovk, Isaac Lewis, Benjamin Lewis and John Cantrell; bondsmen for $10,000.
