Biography

Thomas Jefferson Lewis was born in Hamilton, Butler County, Ohio in 1810 to Jonathan Lewis and Elisabeth Coon Lewis.[1] He married Priscilla Rude January 23, 1834 in Hamilton County, Ohio.[2]

Thomas and Priscilla joined Joseph Smith in the LDS church at Carthage in 1841 and Thomas served on the Governor's Body Guard. Thomas and his family traveled to Iowa with Brigham Young after the assassination of Joseph Smith in 1844. He split with Young in Nebraska and taught school in Missouri and Iowa, locating to Monoma County, Iowa in 1854, where he joined the Thompsonites in Preparation, Iowa, a communalist LDS community. [3] He taught school established the Post Office in his house on section 17, and served as Postmaster[3]

In 1861, Thomas left the Thompsonites and Preparation when community members drove Thompson out and the community dissolved.[4]

His wife, Priscilla Rude Lewis died March 11, 1875 and was buried in Preparation Cemetery.[3]

Thomas died in 1878 at the home of his son Dorman Lewis in Little Sioux, Harrison County, Iowa, and was buried in Preparation Cemetery.[3]
