Note: Birth year guess of "about 1580" was based on the birth year given for her husband's father by Richardson: 1538 (aged 12 in 1550).^[1] Revised to "about 1575" based on a marriage date of 1590 given in a duplicate profile, which also works better with her father's birth of "in or before 1531".^[2]

Note: Birth given as "1568, Montgomery, Montgomeryshire, Wales" on the profile for Mary Lewis (christened 1640 in Massachusetts; died young), which had been attached as a wife of Humphrey, married 1590. Added 1590 (marked uncertain) as marriage date and Wales as birth place. Mary (Lewis) Humphrey's father Thomas Lewis was Sheriff of Glamorgan 1569-70, 1586-7; he died at Cardiff in 1593.^[2] She was more likely born in Glamorganshire than Montgomeryshire.

Biography

Mary Lewis, daughter of Thomas Lewis, Esq., of Van (in Bedwas), Glamorgan, and his wife Margaret, daughter of Robert Gamage, Esq., of Coity, Glamorgan, married Humphrey Mathew, Esq., of Castell-y-Mynach (in Pentyrch), Glamorgan. They had three sons and five daughters, including Thomas Mathew (son and heir) and Jane Mathew (married Rev. William Aubrey, or Awbrey).^[3]
