1741 - George Lewis was possibly in Lancaster County PA, Court Quarter Sessions, 5 Nov 1741. "James Williamson, Senr, James Williams, Junr. and George Lewis for appearance and good behavior of said Williams Senr. Appeared and cont." I read this entry from the original court record book and also have the book "Lancaster County PA Quarter Sessions Abstracts [1729-1742] Book 1", ed. by Gary T, Hawbaker. NOTE- Morton; Annals of Bath page 196, says George with sons John & Benjamin were from Lancaster Co PA.
1746 - George Lewis' Cowpasture River land was surveyed for him. "Surveys in Bath County, 1744-1746" "1746 - Cowpasture, Lewis, George, 430, P.1752" "History of Highland County Virginia" Morton, Oren F., Monterey VA, 1911, reprint Regional Pub Co., Baltimore 1985, page 402.
NOTE- same year: farm north of him-John McCreary, south of him-John/Charles Lewis [Fort Lewis], second south-James Mayes.

Roll of Captain George Wilson's Company, August 11, 1756

Privates [militia, among them were]:
Lewis, George
Lewis, John
Mayes, James
The best description of the people in Cowpasture River is found in Morton; Annals of Bath County VA.
George's wife, Catherine Crawford is not proven by any documentation but is so stated by several Lewis researchers. She was obviously dead by 1755 when George sold his land to sons John and Benjamin because those deeds did NOT include a release of her dower rights. There were doubtless other children. People were killed by Indian raids in this region and at this time. [HWD] Crawford is a valid "Scots-Irish" name.
Some of the family data was taken from Mayes Family: Gretchen Mayes Bellman, who told me much of her information came from an aunt who was a careful researcher. See also Bicentennial History of Bath Co VA, 1991, page 270.
This man has been confused with a contemporary George Lewis who lived west of Staunton VA on the Middle River whose 1796 Will clearly separates him and his family from our George Lewis who died and left a Will in Greenbrier in 1795. All of the Dodrill etc. confusion with our family stems from this Middle River George.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with George by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with George:
George lewis son Hezekiah had a daughter named Margaret who married a dodrill. George's father was George and Crawford. And the dodril mother was Rebecca Lewis . Margaret Lewis daughter Rebecca married into the McCoys. All in around cowpature. So a few of the Lewis may not have been family at first but they married in.. I know they still don't know what George Rebecca dodrill/ daughtrys dad was but her son married my aunt from the Cowpasture George.
