Name

Name: Richard /Lewis/[1]

1609 Birth

The Richard Lewes who arrived in St. Christopher in 1635 at age 26 was born in 1609. [2]

Richard Lewis is said to have been born in Wales. [3] Lewis is a Welsh name, but there is documentation of his birth there.

Other uncourced genealogies show his birth in Brecknockshire, Wales

Parentage of Richard Lewis

The parents of Richard Lewis of Virginia are unknown.

He is often shown with father James (Henry) Lewis, born about 1579 in Wales. [4]. Other genealogies show him as the son of Richard Lewis and grandson of James Lewis, born about 1559 in Wales. Some genealogies show him as the grandson of Lewis ap Dafydd by his wife Siwan. This James Lewis is shown as immigrating to Surry, Virginia and dying there and is then confused with James Lewis of John, Member of Parliament, who lived and died in Wales and had wife Ann as well as sons Richard (a great gamester), Jason, Nicholas, Huw, and George.

Richard Lewis is also sometimes shown with a mother Anne Lewis or Anne Gwraig. [4] Since Gwraig is Welsh for "wife of", she may once have appeared in genealogies as "Anne, gwraig James Lewis."

Since no documentation can be found for these claimed ancestors, they are being treated as legendary ancestry. Since persons who never existed cannot have parents, spouses or children, their profiles have been retained but disconnected from family relationships. 7. 7.0 7.1 7.2 Two copies of the patent appear -- PB6:105, extremely faint in online image, with right margin obscure, & PB7:629, which has several blank gaps in the text. Both patents describe the land as lying in Nansemond Co., so it is unclear why this transaction was recorded in Isle of Wight Co. This tract & adjoining waste land were included in a 530-acre patent granted to Robert COLEMAN, 20 Apr 1684 (PB7:378); no county was given there.
  8. 8.0 8.1 Lewis ancestry. Post by yorkshire88 Wed Mar 21, 2012. Following Somer Lance Lewis' (Jerry's grand-daughter) appearance on KLFY a few weeks ago, someone suggested putting a family tree together. I broached this idea with Frankie Jean about 20 years ago, but getting her to sit down for more than five minutes at a time was nigh on impossible. I did, however, get some family history from her, and I've added to this over the years from my own research, including history on the extended family, including the Gilleys, Swaggarts, Herrons, Hamptons, Beattys, Jacobs, Glasscocks and Calhouns. It's certainly not perfect, nor complete, but I'm adding and correcting pieces of information all the time (I've updated information today regarding the family of Jane Wilkinson (nee Mitchum) and at present there are approximately 250 names on the tree. If anyone is interested in looking at the family tree, please let me know, and I'll contact Ian about how best this could be included on the forum. http://www.jerry-lee-lewis.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=41969. I've been doing a major review of the supposed Welsh ancestry of Richard Lewis of Virginia and can't find documentation for any of it, so I've disconnected the parents. All the links are preserved in their profiles and in a free space page and category on "Flawed Welsh Ancestry of Maryland Lewis Family." There are some real and documented Welsh people with similar names and data, but they never migrated to Virginia or Maryland. If we can find documentation on any of these people, the family links can be easily restored!
