Note by Gloria-I'm wondering if the above John Lewis is the same John Lewis who married Mary Garner in St. Stephens Parish , Northumberland, Virgina between 19 July-18 Oct 1682, daughter of John and Susanna Keene Garner, or perhaps a son from a marriage prior to Mary Garner.

"The parents of John Lewis I are not known, nor do we know if he was born in England or on these shores. There are some records of early Lewis patentees, one of whom may have been the forbear of our John I.

"21 August 1691--Same along with William Morgan--360 acres. (4)
Furthermore, there is an early court record involving a John and Mary Lewis, probably our John I, who were living in Northumberland County as early as 1675, viz:
18 May 1694--John Lewis and Mary his wife brought action against Roger Williams for 800 lbs. tobac due by bill and produced the same under the hand & seal of the sd. Roger Williams dated 17th of October 1675 to which the defendant pleaded the act of limitation, not withstanding which plea Pfts. ordered he pay them sd. Debt which unto the Sd. Lewis--appear next court.....to the contrary. (6)
Later, it seems that after John I and Mary (Garner) Lewis's children were grown, John II remained at the family plantation on Mattapony Neck. James, either through his inheritance, or by his wife's dowry, acquired land and later moved to Mundy Point on the Potomac River several miles east. Some of his children stayed at Mundy and others moved back to Mattapony.
After John Lewis I died in 1697, leaving his widow with five young children, Mary (Garner) Lewis married Richard Price. Many of the records in the clerks office were

destroyed by a fire on October 25, 1710, including the will book which contained John Lewis' will. Some records were later found proving his death occurred prior to May 6, 1697.
This day the last Will and testamt of John Lewis was proved by the oaths of Vincent Garner & Phillip Aherne witnesses to said will and is recorded. court order dated 19 May 1697 (7)
Whereas it appears to the Court that Richard Price and Mary his wife stood indebted to Mr. Thomas Banks in his lifetime by obligation under the hand & seale of the said Mary in her widowhood dated the sixth day of May 1697 Six hundred thirty two pounds of tobacco & casq. The documentation regarding Frances Mutoone does not apply to this John Lewis who left a widow named Mary. Frances Mutoone is proved to have survived her husband John Lewis, also of Northumberland, and remarried to John Nickles. That John Lewis had a son named "Mutton" Lewis who went after Robert Gordon for the legacies left him by his father & mother Frances Nickless. Documentation is on her profile because the John Lewis to whom she is attached appears to have had two different widows.

I would really like to see any documentation on the parentage of John Lewis (1660-1697). The best source I have seen is in the book John Lewis: Lost Pioneer and it states that his parentage is unknown. I also have information from the Susan Lewis Bible which goes back to William the father of Vincent Lewis and then seems to wander into the fields of family legend and says that William Lewis' father was also William Lewis.

I doubt he died in Northampton Massachusetts; it's actually in Hampshire county, 90 miles from Plymouth county, and not coastal, so few visitors in 1697. More likely Northampton county, VA? A quick google search doesn't turn this up, but...
