Biography

Daniel Lewis was a son of John Lewis, an early immigrant and settler of Rhode Island. Daniel was probably born in the 1660's in Westerly, Rhode Island and died in what is now known as Hopkinton in 1718. Harrison gives a birth year of 1662[1]. But Griswold writes that Daniel died in 1717 at almost 50 years old, placing a birth year in the late 1660's[2]. So the 1662 date given here should not be quoted without context. (Part of that context may include Harrison making a pretty egregious error elsewhere, omitting son Daniel, named in the will, from the list of children of Daniel.

The death date is more solid. Harrison gives the precise date of the will as Feb 1, 1717/18.[3] His inventory was taken on 18 February 1717/18.[3] Griswold makes a conservative estimate that Daniel died in 1717, but it is possible he died in January of the year that we would now call 1718. (See also Torrey[4] and Cook[5]).

The distribution and final account of his estate were recorded in 1723.[6]

Daniel Lewis' wife has been recorded variously as -

Torrey: Daniel Lewis (-1718 age at death 50) married Mary [Maxson] (-1721+) by 1701; Westerly, RI.[4]
Daniel Lewis married Mary (Mary Maxon?) and they had five children; John, Jonathan, Mary, Dorcas and Hannah. [7]
and
Daniel Lewis married Mary Button
DANIEL, Westerly, R. I. 1679, perhaps was s. of John of the same, m. Mary Button, d. prob. of Peter and in his will of 1 Feb. 1718, names eldest s. John, Jonathan, Mary, Dorcas, Daniel, and Hannah.[8]

Daniel Lewis was the first settler in Hopkinton, Rhode Island, a new area on the northern edge of Westerly. [9]

He was a fuller of cloth by trade, cleansing and preparing wool for manufacture. He carried on his business on, or near the Laurel Dale Hill. He erected the first dam there, and for many years carried on a thriving business. He was a firm, go-ahead man, honest in every particular, and when once set upon what he considered to be right, was firmly fixed. [10]

He was appointed to the General Assembly as Deputy. [11]

He was a member of the first Seventh Day Baptist Church in Hopkintown. [12]

In his Will he gave to son John the property at Laurel Dale, and to Daniel a farm in the Tomaquaq Valley.

From Lewisiana "his grave and the grave of his wife and some of the children may be seen not far from the road, about half way from the Babcock House (on the site of which, the residence of Horace L. Crandall now stands (1876) to the late residence of Deacon Elnathan W. Babcock".

On January 15, 1701, he and wife Mary deeded land to his brother, David; and on July 14,1704, bought 30 acres from Austin Odie.

Lewis-12833 and Lewis-3694 are not ready to be merged because: One of the two shows his wife as Mary Button, but Mary was his mother. His wife, as correctly shown in the other profile, was Mary Maxon.
