Biography

Catherine Lewis was born circa 1663 in Old Rappahannock, Virginia.

Marriage

Catherine married three times:

  1. William Moss - died 1688 - It is unknown if they had any children. [1]
  2. William Talbott II. When Catherine/Katherine (I've seen both spellings) married William Talbot, she was a widow. William Talbot was involved in settling the estate of William Moss in 1688. "Wm. Talbott & Katherine his Wife" were ordered to appear at court to give testimony. When William Talbott died in 1713, Catherine testified William had died without making a will. She was named Administrator. She was left land in safekeeping for their sons, Samuel and Benjamin. [2]
  3. Catherine remarried after William Talbott's death to John Muse Dec. 7, 1720. She was, at least, his second wife, as he had children. Catherine and John Muse had no children together. [3][4]

Children

Known children include:

  1. Samuel Talbott - born circa 1688 in Old Rappahannock County.
  2. Benjamin Talbott

Death

Catherine passed away in 1722. She is buried in Upperville, Fauquier County, Virginia. Upon Catherine's death, William Talbott's land passed to their sons, Samuel and Benjamin.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Catherine by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Catherine:

Moss Talbot-2 and Moss Talbot-1 appear to represent the same person because: They are the same person and both have the wrong last names. Catherine may have been a Lewis (there are indications but no definitive proof), but she was not a Moss or a Talbot. She may have married a Moss; she definitely married a Talbot; and she married as her last husband a Muse.

Moss Talbot-2 and Moss Talbot-1 do not represent the same person because: This doesn't look like a match to me.

Hi Dewey,

I have wrestled long and hard with Catherine. She was initially entwined with Catherine Ogg, as they both married a William Talbott and had daughters named Margaret. I believe that has been remedied.

Catherine was certainly not born a Moss Talbot. Marriages of the Northern Neck of Virginia 1649-1800 states William Talbott married Catherine Moss (widow) bef. 20 Oct 1698. It states Catherine was believed to have been a Lewis before her first marriage.

That would mean Catherine was born a Lewis, and married a man with the last name Moss (possibly a William, but I've seen no documentation). After his death, she married William Talbott. That is documented.

"TALBOTT, William & Moss, Catherine (wid.); bef. 20 Oct 1698; bride mar. (3) Jn MUSE Sr.; West and Fountleroy in Muse 1:6 & Muse 2:134 believe that she may have been a LEWIS; (RC WB 7:433, 538; Muse 1:6; Muse 2:134)"

Marriages of the Northern Neck of Virginia stated William and Catherine were married before 20 Oct 1698; however, William and Catherine were involved in settling her first husband's estate in 1688, and their son Samuel was born about then. Clerical error?

"William Talbott was involved in the settling of the estate of William Moss in 1688, and in the July Court "Wm. Talbott & Katherine his Wife" were ordered to appear at the next court to give testimony. Moss was Katherine's first husband." (ORCOB 1687-1689, p. 79)

"William Talbott, Jr., died in 1713, for on May 6 "Katherine Talbot came into Court and made oath that William Talbot departed this life without making any will so far as she knows..." She was named Administrator. (OB 6, pp. 88, 91, 107) His estate was inventoried on June 3 of that year. (Wills and Inventories, 1709-1717, p. 134)"

It appears Catherine Moss_Talbot-2 was the product of a GEDCOM import with many duplicates that were never merged. I see the birthdates differ, but the birth and death place of Westmoreland, Virginia, are the same. The woman is Catherine, and she's associated with the last names of Moss, Talbott, and Muse. Three different last names in common would be unusual.

The best resource I've found for Catherine is: https://web.archive.org/web/20201112023807/https://bourboncoky.info/Talbott.html

Thank you.

Could we please fix Catherine's maiden name? It's uncertain she is a Lewis, but that's a better surname for her than two of her husbands' names.

Moss Talbot-1 and Lewis-34762 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, same children (in bio), same husband.

As far as I know, there is no documentation for her parents. West and Fauntleroy made a suggestion she MAY have a Lewis. It appears Catherine married three times: an Unknown Moss, William Talbot, and John Muse. Pam at Find A Grave has been diligently trying to mediate the William Talbot, Catherine, Margaret quandary as two families have been intertwined.
