Biography

Andrew Lewis was born on September 27, 1772, in Bellefont, Augusta, Virginia. He was the son of Charles Lewis and Sarah Murray.[1]

His father's will, written in 1774, states "I give and devise to my son, Andrew Lewis, my plantation which I got from John Lewis George's son, and from the s~d line to where his brother's survey begins; likewise, one plantation on Greenbrier, where on William Crane lives, together with his equal part of all movable estate."[2]

At the age of 29, Andrew married Margaret Lynn Stuart on August 25, 1802, in Greenbrier County, Virginia, when she was 24.[3][4] They had ten children - Charles Cameron, Agnes Stuart, John (died around age 4), Mary Jane, Elizabeth (died before age 1), John Stuart, Margaret (died around age 4), Sarah Frances, Elizabeth, and Andrew (died around age 3).

In 1820, Andrew and Margaret lived in Mason County, Virginia, with 1 male under 10, 3 males 16-25, 1 male 26-44, 1 male over 45, 3 females under 10, 1 female 10-15, and 31 slaves (16M, 15F).[5] In 1830, the couple lived with 1 male 15-19, 1 male 20-29, 2 females 10-14, 1 female 15-19, and 25 slaves (13M, 12F) in Mason County, Virginia.[6]

Andrew is referred to as Colonel in several sources, and perhaps saw military service during the War of 1812.[7]

Andrew died on May 25, 1833, in Point Pleasant, Mason, Virginia, at the age of 60. He was buried at Benjamin Lewis Cemetery in West Columbia, Mason, West Virginia.[8]

In his will, which was executed in May 1833 and probated in July 1833, he divided his property among his six surviving children. He began by providing one slave each to four children (the oldest two already having received one), and left the rest to his wife. He left his main property to his son John, stipulating that the income from the property and from the slaves be used to support his three unmarried daughters until they became of age or married, and after that, to support his wife. He divided his substantial remaining real property (including large tracts in Virginia and Ohio) among his children, as well as his cash and bonds. He also stipulated that none of his properties should be appraised or sold. He named his wife, son John, and friend George Stribling as executors.[9]
