John Lewis 1861 - 1939

John Lewis was born about 1861 at Llanfihangel-Tre’r-beirdd, Anglesey, Wales; the first child of William & Anne Lewis.

I have narrowed his birth to the 3rd quarter of 1861. If this is incorrect, there are two other records from 3rd quarter 1862 & 4th quarter 1862. Only by obtaining the certificates would prove it.

"LLANFIHANGEL-TRE'R-BEIRDD, a parochial chapelry in the hundred of Twrcelyn, county Anglesey, 2 miles E. of Llanerchymedd, its post town, 5 N. of Llangefni, and 11 from Beaumaris. This place was formerly a favorite retreat of the Welsh bards, and hence it received its distinctive appellation. The village, which is small, lies about 5 miles distant from Moelfre Bay. The living is a curacy annexed to the rectory* of Llandyfrydog, in the diocese of Bangor. The church, dedicated to St. Michael, is a very small structure with a single aisle. The charities amount to about £2 per annum. On Bodafon Hill is "the shapely cromlech" mentioned by Rowlands, the table stone of which measures 10 feet in length by 8 in breadth; it is commonly named among the natives "y-maen-Llwydd." At some distance, near a place called Barras, is another small cromlech, now in ruins." [From The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland (1868) - Transcribed by Colin Hinson ©2003]

In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Llanfihangel Trer Bardd like this: LLANFIHANGEL-TRE-'R-BEIRDD, a village and a parish in the district and county of Anglesey. The village stands 2 miles E of Llanerchymedd r. station; was a favourite retreat of the Welsh bards; took from that circumstance the latter part of its name; and has a post office under Bangor. The parish comprises 1,570 acres. ...Real property, £1,221. Pop., 356. Houses, 82. The property is divided among a few. A cromlech, with a table-stone 10 feet long and 8 feet broad, is on Bodafon hill; and another, of small size and in a fractured state, is near Barras. The living is a p. curacy, annexed to the rectory of Llandyfrydog, in the diocese of Bangor. The church is later English and single-aisled, and was recently in disrepair. An ancient cross is in the churchyard.

1881 Census (3rd April)

I can not locate John in the 1881 census. It appears that he had left home and was working somewhere other than in Anglesey. There are too many John Lewis’s in the rest of Wales to accurately locate him. Below is the 1881 census for his parents and siblings.
