Biography

Samuel Lewis was born April 28, 1673, in Swansea, Bristol County, Massachusetts, son of Thomas Lewis and Hannah Baker.[1][2][3][4]

From Early Lewises of New Jersey [5]

Samuel Lewis was 23 years old when his parents returned to the coast in Bristol, R.I. There were mariners among the Lewises and Samuel may have worked on the coastwise boats from that area to N.Y. City during the next few years. At this time there was extensive migration from the Massachusetts region southward into Connecticut, New York and New Jersey. The O.E. Monette reference cited earlier reprints (Vol. 4, p. 582) data from an article entitled, “Founders of Watertown, Nass. as related to New Jersey - 1630-1648.” This listed all the early settlers of Watertown, Mass., who had descendants in N.J. The name of Edmund Lewis is included.

Also in the Monette reference (p. 89) is a list of “First Settlers of Piscataway and Woodbridge, N.J.” It includes, Samuel Lewis 1698 Susanna Jones 1698

Background of Susannah Jones
Susannah was apparently born in New Jersey. Her paternal grandfather, Jeffrey Jones. was prominent in Elizabeth, N.J., and described as “a progenitor of several Woodbridge families.” Jeffrey Jones is said to have come originally from Southold, Long Island where he was a freeman in 1644. His brother Eliphalet lived in Huntington, L.I., and another brother Edward, resided in Southampton, L.I. Susannah was one of 6 children of Jeffrey’s son, Edward. Her siblings included Jeffrey, Samuel, Edward, Mary and Abigail. Others are indicated. Although the mother’s name is not known, there is some evidence that it was “Joanna,” or “Johanna.”

After the marriage Samuel and Susannah apparently lived for about 8 years somewhere in the 15 miles between the communities of Woodbridge and Piscataway, N.J., because both the marriage and birth records were recorded in the two places. On 19 Dec 1706, about 8 months after the third child, Levi, was born, Samuel bought 60 acres in Woodbridge Commons from Benjamin Jones, who may have been relative by marriage. About 8 years later, on 6 Feb 1714, he sold the same property. The description reads, “60 acres moor or less” located “on the north side of land called ‘Hors-Neck,’ it being a First Division Lott in said Woodbridge Common.” It was sold for 405 pounds of good and current money.”

After the Woodbridge property was sold in 1714, Samuel Lewis and his family disappeared.

Sometime in the early 1730s, Samuel and several of his sons (and perhaps sons-in-law) apparently went up the North Branch of the Raritan and selected homestead sites in this fashion.

Death of Samuel and Susannah Lewis
There is no record of Samuel and Susannah's deaths. However, Samuel's death is assumed from the observation of a shroud in December 1739.
