In several records, he is shown as "Daniel Lewis of M.[1]
These records begin immediately following the 1776 creation of Montgomery County, Maryland, from the eastern portion of what had been Frederick County, and suggest that the "M" refers to Montgomery County, Maryland.
This also suggests that there was another Daniel Lewis at the time who was not in Montgomery County.
There is no confirmed birthdate for Daniel Lewis; it would likely be several months prior to his baptism. Daniel Lewis was baptized 6 October 1715 in Queen Anne Parish, Prince George's County, Province of Maryland. [2]
Based on Daniel's father's inventory, Marshall states that Daniel's father was Jonathan Lewis (born1680, Calvert County, Maryland - now Prince George's County, Maryland, and died 13 Feb 1724/25, Prince George's County, Maryland - Inventory (Age 45 years) [2] Most likely, Daniel is the same Daniel, son of Jonathan Lewis, who was baptized in St. Barnabas Church, Queen Anne's Parish, Prince Georges County in Oct 6th, 1715. The relationship is possible and no facts contradict it.
Daniel Lewis was the son of Jonathan Lewis who was born in 1680 in Calvert County (now Prince George's County), Maryland and who died 13 Feb 1724/25, Prince George's County, Maryland (Inventory) (Age 45 years) Daniel Lewis' mother was Mary, ,maiden name unknown, born before 1690, Prince George's County, Maryland. Jonathan and Mary were married before 1706 in Queen Anne Parish, Prince George's County, Maryland [2]
Margaret Unknown
Daniel Lewis married Margaret, maiden name unknown. She died after 1780 in Montgomery County, Maryland [2]
Margaret Beall
Geni [3] on the other hand, makes Daniel's wife Margaret into Margaret Beall, born in Prince Georges County and died 1787 at Bennett's Creek, Montgomery County, and the son of John Beall (of Robert) and his wife Elizabeth. This Margaret is currently shown on WikiTree to have married Joseph Jones.
Margaret Edwards
Margaret might be Margaret Edwards, b. 29 Aug 1711 and d. aft 4 Sep 1781 She was in the area at the right time.
Daniel married about 1744, based on the estimated birth year of his wife Margaret born, say, 1726. .
The relationship is without proof and no facts support it other than proximity in date and place. If the children were born between 1745 and 1765, then if Margaret was b. 1711, the mother’s age at births would be 34-54, with the latter dates quite unlikely.
In 1748, in the earliest record of Daniel, Lewis he is a cavalryman in Captain George Beall's Troop of Horse, Prince Georges County.
If Daniel's son Jeremiah was born in 1745, then Daniel was married, say, 1744 and if aged 21 at marriage, he was born no later than 1723, making him aged 25 when a cavalryman. If Daniel was born in 1715, he would be aged 33 at these events, by no means impossible, but less likely.
Before 1767. Daniel Lewis lived first on Mill Land which he sold to "Losson" Beall's father John Beall before 1767.
Lawson "Losson" Beall, was born, say, 1746, since in 1767 at John Beall's death, Losson received "Mill Land where Richard Scadges (Scaggs) now lives and 70 acres that he lives on called "Addition". Plus part of mill land I had of Daniel Louis. (Daniel Lewis).’
Margaret (Margere) Beall, b. 1749 of John [1700] was also to inherit part of mill land I had of Daniel Louis (Daniel Lowe, Daniel Lewis)
All children were born during the period at Mill Land
From 1769-1779 he lived on Three Bealls Manner in Frederick County.
11 Sept 1769 Robert Beall, son of John of Pr. Geo Co sells to Daniel Lewis of Fred Co. Three Bealls Manner. [4] This would presumably be the home plantation of Daniel Lewis for 10 years from 1769 until 1779. 20 years earlier, on 19 Nov 1751, Robert’s father John Beall son of Robert of PGC had purchased 108a of John and Elizabeth, a portion of Three Bealls Manner, for 8000 lbs tob. from Garey Davis. [5]
In 1751 (19 Nov) Garey (Garah) Davis sold 108a John and Elizabeth, part of Three Bealls Manor, to John Beall. 21 Feb 1727/8, Garah Davis had bought 108a. John and Elizabeth from William, Charles and John Beall.
1769 Daniel Lewis sells the John and Elizabeth part of Three Bealls Manner to Robert Beall
Three Bealls Manner is next to Snowden’s Manor in today’s Colesville area, not far from John Harding’s Hardin’s Choice in Montgomery County.
In July 1776 Daniel Lewis, who died in 1787, was a Private in Captain Edward Burgess' Company, Lower District of Frederick (now Montgomery) County, Militia. (Ref D-42). In September, 1777 he was a private, 1st Co, Lower Bn, Militia (Ref: M-198, T5;44). He took the oath of office (made his "D" mark) before the Hon. Edward Burgess on Feb 28, 1778 (Ref: T-3:58, L-1;42), [6]
Daniel Lewis, Sr, lived in the Lower Part of Newfoundland Hundred (one taxable) in 1777. (Ref R:31:5) [6]. Montgomery County was created ij 1776 out of the eastern portion of what had been Frederick County.

The 2nd son of Jonathan Lewis :Thomas Lewis, bapt.11 Jul 1706, is thought by many researchers to be the same as the Thomas Lewis who leased land from Thomas Lewis of Fairfax, (son of John Lewis of PG Co. d. 1711).In his Will of 1749, Thomas refers to him as "my friend" and leaves him the land on Difficult Run that is occupied by him and William Trammell. His known records have been printed on pages 1031-1034 ofVol 4 of Michael Cook's "Pioneer Lewis Families", but he gives him what I feel is an incorrect pedigree. Here is a summary of his family's records: Thomas Lewis (1706-ca 1790) Name of wife not known. Resided on the Loudon Co. side of Difficult Run.[17]

End of Thomas Lewis Section
The next two sons of JonathanLewis, William b.13 Aug 1708 and Jonathan, b 29 Aug 1711, both appear to have died young.[17]
John Lewis, b.30 Nov 1713 is thought by many to be the John Lewis who married Winifred Thomas, dau of Daniel Thomas of Lower Piscataway Hundred, PG Co.[17]
However, there is a strong dissenting opinion led by Phyllis Cox of Oxen Hill, MD, a descendant of John and Winifred through their son Thomas, and Linda Walden. According to Linda , in a posting to me on this Forum in 2000, Phyllis, who grew up at Harmony Hall, believes that this John Lewis is the son of Richard Lewis of Charles and Fairfax Cos, (the son of Thomas Lewis of PG Co. who died in 1696), while Linda feels that he was the John Lewis, (son of John Lewis of PGCo., son of Thomas Lewis d 1696) who moved to Stafford Co. VA ca 1722. Linda feels that he then moved back to MD and married Winifred Thomas. In my recent posting on the family of Thomas Lewis d. 1696, I have tried to give the records that seem to make this unlikely.[20]

End of the John Lewis -Winifred Thomas branch section
Records of Daniel Lewis (1715-1787), son of Jonathan and Mary, and his family[17].
There have been two very good books written about this family, both published by Heritage Books of Westminster, MD.[17]
The first was "The Lewis Families, Primarily of Montgomery County MD by William Neal Hurley Jr. (Book 14 in his Our Maryland Heritage Series), published in 1999, which primarily covers the descendantsof Daniel's son, Jeremiah (1745-1822), but has some information on Jonathan Lewis and some of his sons, as well as miscellaneous ihformation he found on other Montgomery, Frederick and MD Lewises that he came across.[17]
The second is Doris Jean Post Poinsett's book "David Lewis (1750 -1798) and Johannah Trundle (1754 -1810)" (from Frederick Co. MD to Harrison Co. (West) VA, some Ancestors and Descendants), published in 2002.[17]
Her first Chapter is devoted to Jonathan Lewis and his wife Mary, and cites the best primary documents she could find for Jonathan, Mary, Mary's second husband, Humphrey Beckett , and their children. Her second chapter is devoted to the records of Daniel Lewis, his wife, or possible wives and a list of six children or possible children.Daniel named only four children in his will, but the four listed are different in the two books.Hurley. p. 12, lists the 4 as Jeremiah,b. 30 Mar 1745, Margaret, b. ca 1754, Drusilla, b. ca 1756 and Rezin, no date, but adds a possible David, b. ca 1752, not listed, and a known son, Daniel, b. ca 1755,not listed. There is no further mention of a Rezin in either book, since he was left a heifer, as was the son listed as David in Poinsett's list, below, I am pretty sure this is an error.[17]
In Poinsett, p. 16,she has the Will, dtd 4 Sep 1781, with the four names as Jaremiah, (b. 30 Mar 1745) Margret, no b. date, Drusiller, no b. date, and David (b 23 Sep 1750). and gives Daniel Jr b 1755, as a probable son, not mentioned in the Will. She has one other probable, a Dau, Elizabeth,m. 28 Dec 1784 and 2 possibles, a dau Rachel, (b. 30 Mar 1748, and a son Stephen, poss b. 1760.[17]
Now, I think that the name Hurley gives as Rezin and Poinsett gives as David, could very well be that of Daniel's son, Daniel Jr., poss. spelled Danil, so that it could be mistaken as David. In that case it is likely that David, born 23 Sep 1750, is the son of someone else His birthdate is taken from what is thought to be the family Bible of his son, Jonathan Lewis, b. 1790 ( Pointsett, p. 11, note 19) but it does not say who his father was.[17]
On the last page of this chapter, p. 22, she lists David Lewis, son of Jonathan and Mary, twin of Jonathan (II),both b 7 Oct 1718, resided Frederick, later Montgomery Co. married Drusilla, had dau. Ruth, b. 6 Mar 1753 prob in Fred. Co, d. 25 Mar 1810. m. ca 1771, John Trundle IV, b ca 1748. Ruth buriedDavid Trundles old burying ground near Dickerson, MD. Barnsville Dist.(Birth and death dates from tombstone)[17]
His twin, Jonathan, records given on p. 6 of Chapt. One, also appears to have lived in Fred. Co in a part that became Mont. Co. In the 1777 tax list for Linganore Hundred.Mont. Co., a Jonathan Lewis islisted with 2 taxables.[17]
I think it could be very possible that John Lewis. b. 23 Sep 1750, was a son of David Lewis, b.. 1718 and his wife, Drusilla, and a brother of Ruth, b. 6 Mar 1753, after all, they both married Trundles.[17]
Records of Daniel Lewis Jr (1755- 1836) and his family.[17]
Note:Hurley has nothing more on himPoinsett has a very good and cited record on him in MD and NC on pp 45 and following, but lists only his children.I found an incredible site that lists both his male and female descendants for many generations:[17]

Daniel LEWIS was born on 4 Sep 1755 in Frederick Cty MD. He was born in the part of Frederick County that became Montgomery County in 1776. He served in the military on 1 Aug 1776 in Maryland.592 He emigrated in 1778 from Iredell Co. NC. On at least one occasion, Bishop Francis Asbury spoke at the Lewis farm in Iredell Co. NC He died on 9 Jun 1836. Spouse: Margary WATERS. Daniel LEWIS and Margary WATERS were married on 10 May 1778 in Montgomery Co. MD.593 Married by Rev. Alexander Williamson Children were: Margaret LEWIS[17] . Spouse: Elizabeth BELT. Daniel LEWIS and Elizabeth BELT were married in 1789/90 in Iredell Co. NC.9 Children were:[17] Ephraim LEWIS, Margery LEWIS, Elizabeth LEWIS.
Ephraim LEWIS 595 was born about 1790 in NC.370 He died between 1841 and 1848 in Iredell Co. NC.596 No record of Ephraim's death found. A note in the GSIC files states Ephraim was still in Iredell Co. in 1841 and a letter from Rosa and Elizabeth in July 1848 implies he had died. Ephraim, by 1840 at least, must have been deaf and dumb. In the 1840 census, the column indicating "a male 25 years and upward is deaf and dumb was checked. There had long been a story in our family that "some ancestor" was deaf and dumb. It, then, was Ephraim. Ephraim, by 1840 at least, must have been deaf and dumb. In the 1840 census, the column indicating "a male 25 years and upward is deaf and dumb was checked. There had long been a story in our family that "some ancestor" was deaf and dumb. It, then, was Ephraim. This handicap of Ephaim's may account for the few records we find of his activity in the community when his father Daniel's name was mentioned often."
