Biography

William Leonard Lewis was born in 1905 at Lydbrook, Gloucestershire, the son of George Lewis and Elizabeth Lewis formerly Freeman. [1]

In the 1911 census Leonard, as named, was living with his parents and eight siblings at Hillside Cottage, Upper Lydbrook. He was aged 5 years. [2]

William Leonard Lewis married Edith Matilda Harman in 1929 at the Baptist Chapel, Lydbrook. [3]

This couple had one daughter named Sybil Edith Lewis born 1933.

The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.
At that time William and Edith were residing with Edith's parents at Ivy Cottage, Lower Lydbrook. William, born 16 April 1905, was aged 34. He was a colliery screen coal tipper. William was also a member of the A.F.S. [Auxiliary Fire Service] at Cannop Coal Co. in Forest of Dean. Edith, born 30 June 1905, was also aged 34. The record for their daughter remains closed at this time [2021]. [4]

In the 1946 to 1963 electoral rolls Leonard W and Edith M Lewis, as named, were still residing at Ivy Cottage. Daughter Sybil was included in the rolls from 1954 to 1963. [5]

Edith Matilda Lewis died in 1971 aged 66 years. [6]

William Leonard Lewis died in 1974 aged 69 years. [7]

From the 1974 Index of Wills and Administrations – LEWIS, William Leonard otherwise Leonard William of Ivy House Lydbrook Glos died 23 May 1974 Probate Oxford 22 October £7955. [8]
