Samuel Lewis was born in 1702 in Prince George's County, Maryland. [1][2]
Samuel's father died before 1710. His mother Elizabeth, then a widow, made the following Deed of Gift to her Children 4 Feb 1711/12. [3]
Samuel was one of these siblings named in his mother's deed of gift:
Samuel Lewis of Prince George's County, Maryland, sells land on Difficult Run in Prince William County, Virginia, to Thomas Lewis of Prince William County, Virginia. It could well be that this Thomas Lewis is his son.
Oct. 4, 1734. Samuel Lewis of Prince George in Maryland to Thomas Lewis of Pr. Wm. Co., planter....for 15 lbs. Maryland money....260 a....on Difficult Run....granted out of the Proprietors Office unto John Lewis dated Feb. 9, 1725... deed of lease and release. Sam'l. Lewis
Samuel Lewis owned land called Cox's Rest which he had inherited from his grandfather Thomas Houser. Samuel Lewis in turn gave this land to his son Jonathan. [5]
Although he lived in Prince Georges Co, Samuel had land in Virginia. He received the land from his mother. It was a tract of 113 acres called "Cox's Rest" that had originally been part of his grandfather Thomas Horner's plantation. This was on the Patuxent River, located in Frederick Co in 1748, the portion that became Montgomery County. [6]
In July 1731, John Mathews, a yeoman of Prince William County, Virginia, sells to Jacob Lasswell of Prince William County, a carpenter, land on Goose Creek in Prince William County. Samuel Lewis is a witness to this transaction and signs by mark.
John Mathews of Pro Wm., Yeoman to Jacob Lasswell of same, carpenter ... for 10 Ibs ... 124 a ••• on br. of Goose Cr ... line of survay for George Mathews ... land gr. George Mathews by the Proprietors July 7, 1731 •••• deeds of lease and release. John Mathews
Samuel Lewis died 13 Jun 1748 (aged 46) in Prince George's County, Maryland. [1][2]
Various sources also name Samuel's children as:
At this time, Stephen and the three other children not asterisked above, John, William and Daniel, are also assigned to Samuel, as is Elizabeth, about whom no parentage is known.
Mike Marshall shows Samuel Lewis' parents as John Lewis, born in 1661, Calvert County, Maryland, and died 20 Apr 1711, Prince George's County, Maryland (Probate) (Age 50 years) and his wife Elizabeth Houser, who was born about 1686 in Calvert County, Maryland, and died 30 Jan 1757 in Upper Marlboro, Prince George's County, Maryland (Probate) (Age ~ 71 years) . They were married about 1702 in Prince George's County, Maryland. [1]
Sharon Neal, on the other hand, shows the parents of Samuel Lewis, born in 1702 in Prince Georges County, Maryland, as John Lewis and Elizabeth Horner. [6]
The unsourced Geni profile makes him the son of "John David Lewis, Sr", and his wife Elizabeth. The use of a double first name was not the practice in this time period and immediately makes he information suspicious. [2]
Geni shows Samuel's wife as Winnifred Thomas. Unfortunately, the site contains no source for this information. [2]
There is a Winifred, daughter of Daniel Thomas, of Prince George's County, whose married name is Lewis, creating speculation as to which Lewis she was married to..
Thomas, Daniel, Sr., Prince George's County, 2nd June, 1741; 21st Sept., 1742.
Winifred Thomas married John Lewis, as documented by her parents' estate documents.
Many popular genealogies, however show her as married to a Samuel Lewis, and those which show her married to a John Lewis disagree as to which one.
The relevant candidates for spouse are below:
Many popular genealogies show Samuel Lewis married to Winifred Thomas. However, the estate documents of Winifred's father identify Winifred's husband as John Lewis, whom Winifred's father makes his executor.
Edward Fairchild's site identifies her-- it claims, "some have tried to make Winnifred Thomas the wife of John Lewis, Samuel Lewis' father. Fairchild then goes on to name Samuel's parents as John Lewis b: ABT 1661 in , Prince Georges, Maryland and Elizabeth Horner b: ABT 1663 in , Prince Georges, Maryland.
From the Will of of Daniel Thomas, Ann Dyer and Winifred Thomas Lewis, it is clear that Winifred of Daniel married first John Lewis, having children Pricilla, Mary, Ann and Thomas, and then married Adams, having son Richard.
While it is not impossible that she also married Samuel Lewis and had children by him, it seems likely that Samuel Lewis' wife was someone else, whether or not a different Winifred. The one child known of Samuel's is Stephen.
Geni shows Samuel Lewis as the father of [2]
There is a deed of sale signed by John Lewis on August 20, 1711. [9] This deed is four months after the death of the John Lewis married to Elizabeth Houser.[5]
There were two Lewis families in Prince George's County, one of English descent and one of Welch descent. Thomas Lewis the servant of Richard Edelen married his only daughter Catherine in 1685. They had three son's and two daughter's.
This was not the son of Jonathon, because Jonathan was the son of Samuel Lewis. Samuel Lewis had the land called Cox's Rest, it was his grandfather Thomas Houser's land and he gave this land to his son Jonathan. That means that Jonathan's son Thomas was a nephew of Thomas Lewis married to Sarah Harris and would not have called him a friend.
Now for the son that you do agree upon is the Thomas son of Thomas and Catherine who married Rebecca and they had four daughters and He died in 1726.
The third son was John Lewis born 1690, son of Thomas and Catherine, who when he reached the age of 21 sold his portion of Battersea.
I have been getting a lot of my information from Phyllis Cox a descendant of John and Winiford (Thomas) Lewis' son Thomas. She lived in Harmony Hall from the age of five until she was married. She is a member of the prince George's county Historical Society, she knows the area and the Lewis families. She said that she and a fellow researcher tried to explain to Michael Cook that there were two completely different Lewis families One living in the northern section of Prince George county of English descent and one living in the southern section, which changed back and forth from Charles to Prince George in 1696 and back to Prince George in 1748, of Welch descent. Mr Cook died before he could correct his mistake. With your records and the records in Michael Cooks book I could see the error that most researchers overlook because they have taken this book as their guild and have not studied it enough to see the error's.
It was your book that brought this out in the open for me. Michaels information did not seem right, but until I purchased and studied your book I could not see the whole picture. I met Phyllis after I had come to this conclussion and her information filied in the gaps and made it all a lot clearer.
Phyllis and I disagree on one subject and that is that John the husband of Winiford Thomas was the son of Thomas and Catherine, she believes that he was the son of Richard and Jane, but until I find proof that John married in Stafford County and never returned I will continue with what I have.
