Biography

1661 Name and Birth

Marshall states that John Lewis was born about 1661 in Calvert County, Maryland[1]. However, there is no documentation for this place of birth, and John Lewis' parents are not known.

John Lewis was born about 1661. [2]

1680 Marriage: Unknown First Wife

Marshall believes that in about 1680 in Calvert County, John Lewis married an unknown first wife, who was born about 1664 in Calvert County and died about 1702 in Prince George's County.[1]. (Prince George's County was created in 1692).

Assuming that John and his first wife were the parents of Jonathan Lewis, they married no later than 1683 and became his parents in 1684 in Prince George’s County, Maryland. [3] However since Prince George's County was not created until 1694, Jonathan's place of birth would have been Calvert, not Prince George's County.

1702 Second Marriage: Elizabeth Houser

About 1702, John Lewis married Elizabeth. Marshall believed her to be John Lewis' second wife. [1] Note that Elizabeth's sister married John Soper (or Soaper). John Lewis and his brother-in-law John Soaper then had a number of business dealings.

About 1702 in Prince George's County John Lewis married secondly Elizabeth Houser, born about 1686 in Calvert County.[1]

Following John Lewis' death, his widow, Elizabeth, married Francis Pearson. She died 30 January 1757 in Upper Marlboro, Prince George's County, Maryland. Probate Record.[1]

1711 Deeds of Gift and "Good Luck

Following the death of her husband, Elizabeth Lewis made several deeds of gift as follows:

  • 20 August 1711. By deed after death dated Aug 20 1711, John Lewis, planter of Prince George's County, for 5000 lbs of tobacco, conveyed 50a of Battersea left to him by his father, Thomas Lewis, adjoining the lands of Thomas Lewis, Jr. Note -- this is John Lewis of Battersea
  • 27 September 1711. In a deed dated Sept 27, 1711, Elizabeth Lewis, widow, of Prince George's County, MD conveyed a moiety of a tract of 113 acres called Good Luck, lying originally in Calvert County, by then Prince George's, on the north branch of the Patuxent River, formerly owned by Thomas Houser.
  • Feb 4, 1711/12, deeds of gift from Elizabeth Lewis, widow, to members of her family, listing them by name. [4][5] Deed of Gift (Prince George's County, Deed Book E, p. 154 has Elizabeth Lewis, widow, for natural love and affection "that I bear to my son John Lewis," gives John Lewis a tract on the Forth Branch of the Patuxent River; if he should died without heirs before he reaches 21, or without lawful heirs, then the land was to go to son Stephen Lewis, and if he was to died without heirs, to son Samuel Lewis. From this we can infer that John Lewis, Elizabeth's son, was under age 21, thus born after 1691, and that Stephen and Samuel were younger, also born after 1691[2] A deed of gift from his widow, Elizabeth Lewis, to her children, dated Feb 4, 1711, names "my sons" Thomas, John, Stephen, Samuel; "my daughters" Sarah, Jane, Priscilla; and "my grandson John Davis" signed Elizabeth E. Lewis. [5] Will of John Lewis, dated March 5, 1710, folio 42, WB1, 1698, Prince Georges County wills. Named in 1711 deed of gift from widow Elizabeth to her children. [5] Deed of Gift from Elizabeth Lewis was abstracted in Genealogy of the Sydney-Smith-Glattett-Price and Allied Families, p. 172.) Neither of these records names a Jonathan Lewis. [6]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
