Census

Census: 1850 Federal
Hamilton County, Illinois, United States[3]
Census: 1860 Federal
Date: 1 Jun 1860
Place: Hamilton County, Illinois[4]
James is enumerated as a farmer with land valued at $400 and personal property at $150. In his household are wife, Eliza J., and children Jeremiah, Phoebe E., Nancy, and Philly Ann.
They are living next door to Nancy Cantrell, widow of Isaac Cantrell and her children Catherine and Tilmon. Catherine will become James' second wife.
Census: 1870 Federal
Date: 1 Jun 1870
Place: Shoal Creek, Barry County, Missouri[5]
Catherine has married James D. Lewis as second wife. They left Illinois about 1866, stopped off in Kansas for about three years where daughters Mary and Finetta were born, and were living in Missouri for the 1870 census. In their household are children from James' first marriage: Elizabeth, Philly Ann, Constant, and Lethe. Thomas, Mary and Finetta are children of James and Catherine.
Census: 1880 Federal
Date: 1 Jun 1880
Place: Hamilton County, Illinois[6]
It is unknown when the family left Missouri, but by the 1880 census they had returned to Hamilton County. In the household with James and Catherine are children Lethe, Thomas and Mary. Finetta appears to have died since she was born 1869 and is not on this census.
Neither James nor Catherine have been located in records after 1880 census. James is reported to have died in 1891 and Catherine in 1886 but I have not found death or burial records for them.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:

Lewis-12732 and Lewis-8019 appear to represent the same person because: Birth and death dates and places the same. Child of same parents. Sorry I missed this when I was setting up my profile. I have wives and children to add for James.
