Mary C. Lewis was born in July 1835 in Illinois. She passed away in July 1889 in Hamilton County, Illinois and is buried in Little Springs Cemetery, Hamilton County.
James and Mary had six children. James died at Camp Mather possibly of pneumonia or measles during the Civil War. Camp Mather, outside of Shawneetown, Illinois, was occupied by the 56th Illinois Infantry from December 1861 to the fall of 1862. It was a farm and summer home belonging to Henry and Mary Eddy. The summer home on the property became the camp hospital and was used to treat measles patients during an outbreak in the winter of 1861-62 that killed eight soldiers. James served in Company C, 56th Regiment, Illinois Infantry (Mechanic Fusileers). Mary filed for a pension based on this service 1 August 1865. She then filed for a pension as guardian for four minor children of James on 21 Feb 1876. Since she had remarried, I believe she would no longer be eligible for a pension for herself.
Mary, now a widow after James died in 1862, is living on the family farm with children Joshua, Harriet, Sarah, Millie, William, and Mary. Joshua is mistakenly listed as George on this census, which has led some researchers to say Mary and James had seven children.

However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mary:
Lewis-12601 and Lewis-8029 appear to represent the same person because: Same parents and same birth date. Sorry I missed this when I was creating my profile. I have Mary's two husbands and children. Would like to merge so they can be added.
