If this profile represents the son of John and Alice Lewis, then this Joseph Lewis was, as far as can be told by the most recent research, not associated in any way with Connecticut, either birth, life, nor death. See the "Research Notes" section below for the remove information concerning this profile.

Biography

As per Anderson[1] and Wakefield,[2] Joseph was the son of John Lewis and Alice (Mattocks) Harris, born 4 Feb 1662, most likely in Boston, Massachusetts.

Marriage and Children

There no records indicating any marriage or children, and, in referring to the children of John Lewis, Anderson said, "There is no evidence that this immigrant [John Lewis] had any grandchildren, or that any of his children married."[3]

Research Notes

The following was prior information and sources for this profile. It is being left here as a reference.

Joseph LEWIS married Elizabeth CASE on 30 Apr 1674 in Windsor, CT; however, Elizabeth married a different Joseph Lewis. This Joseph Lewis was only 12 years old when Elizabeth Case married the other Joseph Lewis.

I, Bob Hall, adopted this file on Aug. 12, 2013. My fathers ancestral charts show that Joseph was a son of John and Sarah Lewis. It is most likely that Joseph's mother was John Lewis' second wife, Alice Mattocks. Alice's maiden name may actually be Bishop. See ref. 1)

This Joseph Lewis is not the one who married Elizabeth Case. The one that married Elizabeth was Joseph Lewis [Lewis-425], He was the son of John and Margerite (Margaret) Lewis. He was baptized with his twin sister Mary on Mar 29, 1640 (the original record was 1st month, 29th day; in old calendar, this would be in March not January) [1].

He married Elizabeth Case on 30 April 1674 in Windsor, CT [2].

They had three children:

1. Elizabeth born 20 March 1674 (1675 new calendar) in Simsbury, CT [3]

2. Joseph born 15 March 1676 (1677 new calendar) in Simsbury, CT [4]

3. John born 8 January 1680 (1681 new calendar) in Simsbury, CT [5]

There is a probate file for Joseph:

Name Joseph Lewis

Probate Date 1680

Probate Place Hartford, Connecticut, USA

Inferred Death Year 1680

Inferred Death Place Connecticut, USA

Case Number 3380

Item Description Probate Packets, Ledlie, S-Lloyd, D, 1641-1880

Detail Probate Files Collection, Early to 1880; Author: Connecticut State Library (Hartford, Connecticut); Probate Place: Hartford, Connecticut

Title Connecticut, Wills and Probate Records, 1609-1999

The probate file identifies him being of Town of Simsbury and names his wife Elizabeth Case. Her father John Case inventoried the estate. His debtors include John Case and Joseph's brother John's wife Mary's brother Samuel Humphrey. The probate was not closed until 1706. It mentions his adult children Joseph Lewis, John Lewis, and Elizabeth Smith. The final accounting of the estate was by John Tuller and his wife Elizabeth Tuller (formerly Case and Lewis).

Note further, I am a descendant of Joseph's brother Samuel [Lewis-427]. My Lewis y-DNA match group includes descendants of Joseph [Lewis-425], his half-brother Isaac [Lewis-433] as well as other descendants of his brother Samuel.

I have rewritten the bio and updated the data fields for this profile assuming that it represents the son of John and Alice (Mattocks) Lewis.

If this profile for Joseph Lewis is the son of John and Alice, then all of the information concerning this Joseph should be removed as there is no evidence that he married or had children.

If this profile for Joseph Lewis represents a person from Connecticut who can be proven to have married and had children, then he should be removed as a child of John and Alice and a new profile should be created for John and Alice's son, Joseph Lewis.

Lewis-8855 and Lewis-2536 appear to represent the same person because: same name, same parents, same siblings

Lewis-8855 and Lewis-2536 are not ready to be merged because: These are very likely the same person but given the deferring birth year estimations, and possibility of 2 different mothers, it might be good to keep both just until there's more clarification?

Page 23 of Genealogical and Memorial: A Record of the ..., Volume 1 edited by William Richard Cutter also states that Joseph had additional children: Elizabeth, born March 20, 1675, John, January 8, 1781.

Lewis-6264 and Lewis-2536 are not ready to be merged because: Marriage date would make one of them too young. However per notes, unclear which is mother, and which is step-mother. Might be possible that they are half-brothers?
