This farm was later sold to her brother Fred and then to a nephew, Melvin Volke. Hedwig was in grade 6 when they left Germany. Starting school at Beaver Creek School at age 12 she had to begin in grade one as she had to learn to speak English and read and write in this language. When she reached grade six, and being 15 years old she had to quit school. She always regretted not being able to complete her education, but became an avid listener of orld events. After leaving school she worked for various farm families to help support her familie's needs and hers. She went to work for Peder Andersen to cook for his coal minersfor $10.00 a month. Hedwig and Peder were married on May 23, 1936 in the Big Beaver Roman Catholic Church. They resided on the farm where they raised seven children and coal mined until the mine closed in 1951. She always had a big garden to feed her hamily and loved gardening. She always said it was a nice break to be away from 7 noisy children. They continued farming until Peder's death in October, 1968. She resided on the farm with her son Ernest until 1970 when she bought a house and moved to Bengough, where she resided until her death. Her son Ernest bought the farm and got married. Throughout her life Hedwig was active in the Homemaker's Club, the C.W.L., Home School Board and supported various other organizations. Many functions were held at her home, with the coffe pot always on and lots of food to eat. Their home was always open to their many friends and neighbors. Hedwig was a strong hard-working woman, wife and mother. Her family always came first and most and she would do without. After moving to Bengough she cooked for road construction crews in Sask. and did home care in Bengough. She also took in boarders. She enjoyed travelling and was very fortunate to have made four visits to her aunts, uncles and many cousins in her homeland Germany, and twice to Denmark to visit her husband Peder's family, among varius other trips.
