Richard Lightfoot was the son of Phillip Lightfoot, the first Lightfoot to come to Georgia. Phillip was of English origin, and settled in St. George Parish (now Burke County) in 1769.


From the Lightfoot Family File available at the Washington County Genealogy Research Center in Sandersville, Georgia, the children of Richard and Martha Lightfoot include: 1. Capt. Philip Lightfoot, b. 24 Feb 1810, d. 31 Mar 1898; married to Caroline Wolfe, b. 30 Sep 1821, d. 25 Aug 1889. 2. Robert Lightfoot 3. William Lightfoot 4. Temperance Lightfoot, b. 11 Mar 1816, d. 8 Sep 1902; was married 5 Feb 1835, in Washington County, Georgia to David Sheppard, b. 1811, d. 1864; they had a son William F. Sheppard (b. 1836), married Sophronia V.R. White (1837-1899). 5. Nancy Lightfoot, b. 1 Jan 1819, d. 8 Oct 1878; married William Webster, b. 1806, d. 16 Sep 1881; they were the parents of 14 children. 6. Richard William Lightfoot, b. 24 Dec 1824, d. 1879; married 1st to Mary E. Hurst, b. abt 1821; they had a son Rev. Phillip H. Lightfoot, b. 23 Apr 1846, d. 26 Nov 1879; Richard married 2nd to Anne E. Nuckolls; they had a son Richard William Lightfoot, b. 16 Sep 1870, d. 14 Apr 1945; he married Margaret Thomas McGowan.


In 1825, Richard Lightfoot is recorded as a member of the Harris Meeting House, an early Methodist congregation located about five miles north of Sandersville on the Linton Road. This record by Rev. Tillman Snead also states: "Baptized Richard Lightfoot, son of Martha and Richard Lightfoot 20th Apr 1825."
