Biography

Parents: Goodrich Lightfoot married Mary Chew in Orange County, Virginia on 9 June 1709, Orange, Virginia. Mary was born 1686 in Orange County.[citation needed][1] Note: That her maiden name was Chew is disputed.[2]

John Lightfoot was born February 7, 1711:

  • John son of Mr. Goodrich Lightfoot Born Febry. ye 7th, 1711 (entry from transciption of St. Peter's Parish Register, pg. 21)[3]

John Lightfoot died before June 17, 1735, apparently unmarried and without issue.[4] See Will (below).

Will of John Lightfoot

proved 17 June 1735, Col. Goodrich Lightfoot (father) executor, names "his father, Goodrich, . . . brothers, Goodrich Lightfoot, Jr., and William; and sisters, Elizabeth and Mary; and bequeaths to Martha Chew a horse colt."[5]
"Dr. A. G. Grinnan writes that there is only one Lightfoot will on record, viz: that of John Lightfoot, probated 17 June 1735. Gives negroes and land to his brother William, sisters Mary and Elizabeth, father Col. Goodrich Lightfoot, Sr. and to Mrs. Martha Chew; his father sole executor. Witnesses, Thomas Chew, John Howard, and Isaac Smith. 'Mrs. Martha Chew,' adds the Doctor, 'was Martha Taylor, sister of Erasmus and George Taylor, wife of Thomass Chew, magistrate, vestryman, etc., of Orange, in 1734, and after. It is a mystery to me (A.G.G.) that he should leave property to Mrs. Chew. I know the Taylor connection, and there was no relationship to the Lightfoots.'"[6]

Col. Goodrich Lightfoot

"On April 27, 1738, Col. Goodrich Lightfoot, the father, executor of John Lightfoot, deceased, and Mary, his wife, sold land formerly belonging to John Lightfoot."[5]

"Col. Goodrich Lightfoot died in 1738. The will of his son, Goodrich Lightfoot Jr., was proved in Culpeper county June 15 ,1778; dated April 24, 1778."[5]

Notice that "Col. Goodrich Lightfoot died lately at his brother's" in Orange County, Virginia, was published in the 14 April 1738 Virginia Gazette.[6]

While dates from the JSTOR articles conflict (selling land after his death), the Find a Grave memorial for Col. Goodrich Lightfoot (Find A Grave: Memorial #113565245) gives July 14, 1738 as the date of the Virginia Gazette that posted notice of his death and includes the following transcription:

"Williamsburg, July 14. We hear from Orange County that Col. Goodrich Lightfoot died lately at his house in that County. He went to the Courthouse in good health, was taken ill there, carried home that evening, and not withstanding all possible care of him, he died the next morning."[7]

The Find a Grave memorial also notes that Goodrich "was reportedly born and raised in New Kent (later Culpeper) County Virginia where he is mentioned in St. Peter's Parish Register as late as 1722. By 1724 he had moved to Spottsylvania County. . . . His land was located in that part of Spottsylvania County which became Orange County in 1734 and Culpeper Co. in 1749."[7]

Not Him

Information about other John Lightfoots, who are not this John ([Lightfoot-43]).

  • husband of Mary Elizabeth Clack, married about 1744. Mary Clack married (1) a John Lightfoot "of the Sandy Point Lightfoots"[8]
  • husband of the Deer Clan Cherokee, mother of Dorcus, Nancy, and William (John Lightfoot, born 1730, is probably the right John for them).
  • father of Claiborne Lightfoot, born c1765/70, but it's possible, and Claiborne doesn't seem to fit with anyone else. (but if John is son of Philip & Mary Armistead... no.)
  • son of Philip Lightfoot (d May 30, 1748) and Mary Armistead. Tyler's "Lightfoot Family" shows he died before 1769 without issue. If he were their son, he would have been alive (and adult) when his father's will was presented at York court 20 June 1748 (named in will & was security with William Nelson for probate certificate to William Lightfoot, executor).

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his ancestors' Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

The profile for Mary Chew (Chew-118) is currently attached to parents too young for her birth (1686) and not in Orange County. I was going to suggest that Chew-118 be detached from the parents, but in researching her, it may be better to detach her as wife of Goodrich Lightfoot. Although speculation is that Chew was his mother's maiden name because of "Martha Chew" in John Lightfoot's will, I have not found that supported (and transcriptions of will differ - one leaves a colt to Martha Chew and one said "Mrs. Martha Chew" was named).

Anyone have support for Chew as his mother's maiden name?

nope. Philip's trail hasn't been documented in WikiTree yet. I'll be removing the MC badge from Lightfoot-255.

I haven't double-checked the trail for Gateway Ancestor Philip Lightfoot-255, son of John, but his profile has the Magna Carta badge, which should mean that the project has been reviewed/approved a trail to a surety baron for him. It means also that the profile attached as his brother John Lightfoot-92 just needs to be developed & then reviewed/approved to also get the MC badge.

um. I think Michael must have been looking at a different profile when he posted that comment.

update: Gateway John Lightfoot is probably brother of Philip, both sons of John Lightfoot. (see Tyler's article, page 204 & Lightfoot-91)

From what I see on this profile it is the wrong John Lightfoot i.e. not a Gateway ancestor unless he was born in England moved to the USA and returned to England to die but see no eveidence of that on this profile. His issue all appear to be born in England. His son Phillip Lightfoot-255 is.. a gateway ancestorQuestion is is Who is the John Lightfoot in the list Of Gateway Ancestors

going with three John Lightfoots for now:

Lightfoot-43 - born 1710/1711

Lightfoot-67 - born 1726, 1st husband of Mary Clack, died without issue. Probably the third son of Philip Lightfoot

Lightfoot-500 - born 1730, fought in the Rev. War. Son William b 1758 did also.

update: Merge of Lightfoot-204 & Lightfoot-43 completed.

I've proposed the merge with Lightfoot-43. Do you have any non-Ancestry sources you can share for his dates?

Hi! Another duplicate profile has April 26, 1778 in St Marks Parish, Culpeper, Virginia as death info. Do you have a non-Ancestry source you can share for June 17, 1735 in Orange?

update: Merge completed.

Lightfoot-750 and Lightfoot-43 appear to represent the same person because: When you merge, please keep the 1778 death information & it has the most info on location (I haven't found a source yet for the other death date, 1745, or 1735 in Orange, Virginia that another duplicate profile has). The birth year in the datafield should be the 1711 one (when old/new date - i.e., 1710/11 - go with "new" when only one year can be entered). Thanks!
