Biography

William was born around 1818 ^[1] He was the son of John Lightfoot and Elizabeth Sargent.

He married Hannah Birchall on 11 February 1839 in Nantwich, Cheshire, England; his profession was given as tailor. ^[2]

• Elizabeth Lightfoot, christened on 20 June 1839 ^[3], who married John Platt, a cordwainer, on 28 December 1870 in Nantwich ^[4]
• Sarah Lightfoot, christened on 03 January 1844 ^[5]
• John Lightfoot, christened on 14 February 1846 ^[6] and buried on 17 May 1859 in Nantwich, aged 13 ^[7]
• Anne Lighfoot, christened on 08 May 1848 ^[8]
• William Lightfoot, christened on 23 October 1850 ^[9] and buried on 11 April 1852, again in Nantwich ^[10]

Census information

The 1841 census finds William and Hannah, along with their 1-year-old daughter Elizabeth, living in the household of John and Ann Birchard on Beam Street, Nantwich. ^[15]

At the census of 1851 he and Hannah were living in their own household on Beam Street with their children Elizabeth (11), Sarah (7), John (5), Ann (2) and William (0). His occupation is listed as journeyman tailor. ^[16]

At the census of 1861 he and Hannah, both aged 41, were living on Beam Street, Nantwich with their children Elizabeth (21), Sarah (17), Ann (13), William (6) and John (1). His profession is still listed as tailor. ^[17]

Although a William Lightfoot (born Nantwich 1818) was buried in Nantwich in 1866, it is noteworthy that, on the marriage record of William's daughter Elizabeth, William is listed as a "taylor", while her husband's father is shown as "deceased". This suggests that the William buried in 1866 was a different person.

Hannah is shown as the head of the household in the 1871 census, so it appears that William died in the first few months of that year.

However, the marriage record of William and Hannah's son William, dated 1876, still shows his father's profession as "tailor" rather than "deceased", so perhaps this is not a reliable indicator.
