Katherine Lightfoot was a Quaker minister. She was born near Hillsborough, County Down in 1678[1] to parents Thomas Lightfoot and his first wife Mary whose maiden name is unknown.
Her parents were not Quakers when she was born. Her mother probably died some time not long after 1683, when her second brother was born, because in 1692 her father, by then a Quaker living in Lisburn (a few miles from Hillsborough), told the Quaker meeting of his intention to marry again. He did so, and in 1694 the family moved to county Westmeath. (See her father's profile.)
On 13 12m (February) 1700 (1701), Katherine Lightfoot of Ballykeeran, County Westmeath, married James Miller in a Quaker ceremony in Waterstown, Westmeath.[1][2] James Miller was a farmer. He was born in county Antrim (where the Lightfoots had recently lived) but gave his address as county Derry in his wedding certificate.
Their first child was born in county Derry in 10m (Dec) 1701, but following children were born in Timahoe, county Kildare, which fell within the compass of the Quaker's Dublin monthly meeting.[1] The family list produced by the Dublin meeting gives us the details of Katherine's parents and birth, confirms the details of her marriage, and lists the couple's children, who were
There was plainly another child, Hannah, probably born in about 1717, who does not feature in the family list, but who is mentioned in her father's will. [3]
Katherine Miller started to feature in the records of the National Irish Quaker meetings in 1716 when she was one of 24 women signing an epistle addressed to the Dear and wellbeloved Sisters of the Quakers in Ireland. [4] In 1725 she appeared in a list of Friends in the Ministry, on the occasion of a visit to county Cork with Hannah (Peisley) Judd. they went as far as Castlesalem, return'd to our first day meetings, were at our third day meeting, and went hence to Youghall. [5] She continued to appear in records like these several times each year until 1729, although with gaps in 1718, 1726 and 1728. Perhaps one of these corresponded with the birth of her daughter Hannah.
Katherine's brother Michael Lightfoot and her step-brother John Wiley both emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1712. Her father, step mother, their unmarried children, their newly-married daughter Abigail and her husband Joseph Wiley all followed in 1716. Katherine, her husband and their family followed in 1729. [6] They travelled on the Sizar with Katherine's step sister Mary (Wiley) Jackson who had returned to Ireland on a visit. Mary died at sea during the voyage and Katherine's husband James witnessed the will that she wrote then. The family arrived at Philadelphia on 10 9m (November) 1729.[6]
Katherine Miller died in Pennsylvania on 19 10m (December) 1729 shortly after the family's arrival. [7][6]
Katherine's mother's maiden name was not Pulford; that was Thomas Lightfoot's third wife.
This family is described in a large number of articles, genealogies and histories, many of which are discussed in her father's profile. Unfortunately, many of these including the background note to The Lightfoot Papers are unreliable. Perhaps the most reliable are Myers' Immigration of the Irish Quakers into Pennsylvania[6] and Fetters' Six Columbiana County, Ohio, pioneer families. [8]

- We should mention that Katherine was a Quaker minister
- Katherine's mother's maiden name was not Pulford; that was Thomas Lightfoot's third wife.
- Abigail was Katherine's half-sister, daughter of her father's second wife
- Her parents did not move to Ireland in 1692; Katherine was born there in 1678
- I think we can be more specific about which members of her family moved to Pennsylvania when; we can also state that she and her family travelled there in the ship on which her step-sister died
- We can be more certain about her death
- Some of the children attached to her and her husband are incorrect. There is a complete record of her children, in the Irish Quaker records, namely Sarah, Elizabeth, Samuel (who died young), James, Mary, Katherine and Anne. Hugh should simply be removed - I don't know where he belongs. The History of the Harlen Family (cited as a source on his profile) tells us that John was the son of Gayen Miller. He should be moved. Hannah is a little more confusing and needs a little more research.

Miller-13189 sourced as child of John & Mary with conflicting dates Miller-13161 of Robert & Katherine, Bedford Miller-13180 of Abraham in Dorset all of those inadequately sourced That Katherine may have married in 1694/5 per the unsourced assertion in the duplicate profile.
Miller-13180 Miller-13161 Miller-13166 Miller-13189 do not appear to be children of Lightfoot-297 as there is no source indicating she married or bore children prior to age 18 or in a location other than Northern Ireland. Note she immigrated to America in the year of her death, 1729. Miller-13178 is a possibility in case the source for the year of immigration is wrong.
