Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
John Lilly IV was a Virginia colonist.

John Lilly III, son of John Lilly II and Dorothy Wade of York and Gloucester Counties, Virginia.

Origins

John was baptized August 3, 1669 in Charles Parish, York County, Virginia Colony. He was a son of John Lilly and Dorothy Wade.[1]

We do have record of his baptism. August 3, 1669, John Lilly, son of John Lilly and Dorothy [Wade] is baptized in Charles Parish, York County.[2][3]

There is almost no other evidence for this John Lilly III. The records of Gloucester Counties, Virginia did not survive. What little we have has been preserved by family members.

Family

John married about 1694. We do not have record of his wife, though many descendants believe she was Dorothy Billups.

John Lilly III's wife was NOT Jane Chisman, born 21 March 1694/5, daughter of Thomas.[4] Her father's will, which was presented 18 July 1715, names his daughter as "Jane Chisman."[4] Daughters were always referred to as their married names in wills, therefore she could not have been married. See Thomas Chisman to read his will. In addition, she would have been much too young to be the mother of sons born around 1696 and 1700.

Children

  1. John Lilly IV b about 1696
  2. Edmund Lilly (probable) b about 1700 Note: Edmund is not proven son of John III, but is likely.[1]

Note also: A Robert Lilly is included in this profile, but there is no evidence for him that I can find.

Death and Legacy

John died young, as he was gone by 1710. In that year, John Lilly (which had to be John IV) asked the court to allow him to choose of Richard Kendall as his guardian.[1]

Note: Information in this post apparently came from the Billups/Lilly Papers

Robert Billups had a daughter, Mary Billups. She married John Lilly. John Lilly died about 1796. About 1801 Zadoc Litchfield married Mary Lilly and they had Larkin and Lois Litchfield. About 1806 Zadoc Litchfield died. Larkin Litchfield Married Margaret Todd.
...from some records from Glouster Co. called the Billups,Lilly papers from 1700-1800 when Richard Billups kept most records

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Profile needs sources with working links that show connections to wives Dorothy and Elizabeth, and please provide text of or link to John IV's mentioned will to show he is father to children, all of which show John and Dorothy as certain parents without such documentation.

Ancestry is showing John Lilly/Mary Billups (my 7th Grandparents) having Robert D Lilly (6th Great Grandpa) born 1720. So, John's correct death date will be important and this source does not mention Robert. Did ancestry give the wrong parents? This is so confusing!

Cynthia, John Lilly III has children listed with Jane Chisman, who was disconnected as his wife. Any objection to my disconnecting his children from Jane?

We really don't know the name of John III's wife. Maybe the thing to do is make her "unknown" and talk about the possibilities in the biography. What do you think? Anyone have an opinion on this?
