John Lilly II born ca 1640 AKA Lylley, Lillie, Lily, Lyllie, Lylley[1]
John Lilly was born c. 1640 at Milford Haven, York County, Virginia.[2] He was a son of John Lilly and Mary Moulson.[2]
His birth date is a guess, based on known dates for other family members and events.
John's father died young, leaving John an "orphan."[2] We do not know the date of death for John Lilly I, but by 1646, Mary (Moulson) Lilly had remarried. In October, 1646 the court named Edmund Chisman as father-in-law (step-father) to John Lilly orphan.[2]
John Lilly II was mentioned as the son of John Lilly in the 1646 guardianship records. His guardian was his father in law [ie stepfather] Edmund Chisman.

Estate of John Lilley are as followeth: Imprs five cowes one heifer of twce yeares old two heifers of a yeare old apeece in all 8 head Whereof dead one cow and three of the yeare calves dead.
Mary Chisholm died Dec. 11, 1678 according to record in Charles Parish Register. No estate records of any kind for Mary Chisman have been found in the York County Court Records. The first mention of the first name of Edmund's wife were the court records listed below. Consequently, it is not certain that this Mary was John's widow or John's mother. This has been just assumed in all the writings I have found. Probably she was, but it is not proved.
Married, in about 1667, to Dorothy Wade, daughter of Arminger Wade, proven in Arminger Wade's Will:
The wording of Arminger Wade's Will, written January 15, 1677, gives clues to the children's birth dates. He referred to the "children of my daughter Mary Hay, dec'd, and the children of my daughter, Dorothy Lilly."[2] This implied that Dorothy had more than one child at that date. Unfortunately we do not know which ones. Mary was probably older than Elizabeth, judging by their marriage dates, 1688 and 1703 respectively.
Children, birth order not known:[2]
John died after 1686 at York County, Virginia.[2] In a deed regarding payment for a horse pressed into service by the king, dated 1 April 1686, John Lilly III is referred to as "John Lilly, Junr."[2] Presumably, this designation would not have been used if his father were deceased.
