Biography

Origin

Robert Lilly born in 1776 at Fluvanna County, Virginia, a son of Robert Lilly and Fanny Moody.

Robert was born about 1776, per the 1850 Census which reports his age was 74 years old.[1]

Marriage and Children

Robert married Obedience Bridget Conley. They were married April 20, 1801.

Robert Lilly, of Fluvanna County, came to Montgomery while a boy, and married Miss Bridget Conley, a sister of Garland Conley, heretofore mentioned as a son-in-law of Henry Farley. In 1800 he purchased of William Ward ne [one?] of his surveys in the lower end of this county, and settled on it at or near the place where Andy Fowler now lives, near Chapmanville, in 1801. It is said that an Indian chief accompanied him from his old home in Montgomery to his new home in Logan and remained with him for some time. [2]

Robert Lilly was the father of twelve children, six sons and six daughters (not necessarily in order of birth, listed as sons and then daughters):[2]

  • Thomas Lilly, went south when a boy;
  • Robert Lilly; m a daughter of Garland Conley;
  • William Lilly was never married;
  • John Lilly; m a daughter of John Adkins of Kanawha and move to that county;
  • James Lilly; m a daughter of James Ferrell, and settled near the mouth of Big Creek;
  • Edward Bailey Lilly, who is still living (1896); m Susan Butcher, a daughter of Joshua Butcher.
  • Elizabeth Lilly; m William Thompson;
  • Sarah Lilly; m Garland B. Conley;
  • Polly Lilly; m Patton Thompson;
  • Fannie Lilly; m Simeon Payne of Cabell County;
  • Dolly Lilly; m Joseph Myer, and moved to Missouri;
  • Nancy Lilly; died unmarried."

1850 Census

The 1850 Census found Robert Lilly, age 74 y/o, a farmer with 2,000 acres, living in Logan County, Virginia. Living with him were: William Lilly 38 y/o, James Lilly 25 y/o, Edward Lilly 21 y/o, Frances Lilly no age listed, Mary J. Lilly 12 y/o, Gordon Lilly 11 y/o, Elizabeth Thompson 47 y/o, Judy Thompson 16 y/o, Henry Thompson 14 y/o, Robert Thompson 12 y/o, Mary Thompson 10 y/o, John Thompson 6 y/o, America Thompson 4 y/o, William H. Thompson 3 y/o. Everyone in the household was reported as born in Virginia.[1]

Location Notes Logan County formed in 1824 from Cabell, Giles, and Kanawha Counties. West Virginia formed in 1863 from 50 counties, including Logan.[3]
