Biography

Edmund Lilly

Origin

Edmund was born c. 1694 at Milford Haven, Gloucester County, Virginia.[1]

Misinformation

Unfortunately, Gustav Anjou, the discredited "genealogist," wrote about this family. Apparently he was paid $25,000 in the early 1900's to do a pedigree for Eli Lilly of Lilly Drug Co. He said the Lilly family were French. They were actually English, or at least we suspect they were English. Their origins are not known.[1]

This family, in particular, has been the focus of a great deal of misinformation on the internet. Anything published without source information needs to be disregarded. This is true of any genealogy, but especially true of the Lillys, Reades, Amingers, Flippens and Bedfords.

Early Life

Edmund lived with his family on Byrd Creek north of the James River.[1] His brothers William and Arminger settled nearby, both on the north of the James. Families associated with the Lillys in Gloucester County lived nearby. Ralph Flippen was on Muddy Creek and Stephen Bedford was on Deep Creek, both just south of the James River. A [1] map of the area] showing their relative locations is provided by Lou Poole.[2].

Marriage

Edmund married to Anne Flippen. Lou Poole states in his research notes, "So it appears that the Flippen family and the Edmund Lilly family arrived in Goochland at almost the same time, if not at the same time" and "I'm descended from the NC Edmund Lilly family (NC Edmund was the son of Edmund Lilly, Sr., who I now believe is most likely to have married Anne Flippen).[3]

Edmund Lilly, Jr removed to North Carolina.[2]

Children

Possible children of Edmund Lilly and Anne:[citation needed]

  1. Armiger Lilly, Sr
  2. Edmund Lilly, II of NC
  3. John Lilly
  4. William Lilly,
  5. Thomas Lilly,
  6. Mary (Lilly) Shepherd
  7. Robert Lilly
  • Edmund Lilly had four children proven by records.
1. Armiger Lilly, probably born ca. 1726, was probably either the eldest or the second son of Edmund Lilly.
2. John Lilly V possibly the eldest or second son named for Edmund's father
3. William Lilly Note that John Lilly IV also has a son named William. This must be a family name.
4. Ann Lilly born 1738.
  • Probable sons of Edmund.
5. Edmund Lilly who moved to North Caroline married ca. 1750 so was probably born ca. 1728.
6. Robert Lilly, born ca. 1742, moved to West Virginia.
7. Thomas Lilly, moved to Kentucky.
1735 Edmund left court records in Goochland County.
1739 Edmund Lilly patented 280 acres of land in Goochland County, Virginia.

Death & Legacy

Edmund died between 1777 and 1782 (per deed records) at Mercer County, Virginia.[2]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Edmund by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Edmund:
