Origin

Mary was probably born in Milford Haven, Gloucester County, Virginia. Milford Haven was the location of the original patent of her grandfather, John Lilly I.[1] This was the home place of the family. Mary's parents were John Lilly II and Dorothy Wade.[1]

Birth date is a guess, based on her marriage c. 1688.
The Birth Date is a rough estimate. See the text for details.

Mary's parentage is revealed by a poorly worded patent (Patent Book 7: dated 20 October 1688). This patent refers to land of "Mr. Robert Read, in right of his wife, Mary, dau. to Mr. Jno. Lilly ..." [The land was] "assigned to Edward Mallson, 1 Feb 1643, & due sd. John Lilly as marrying with the heiress of sd. Mallson ..."[2]

As June Byrne points out, the patent raises some questions, "Who is Edward Mallson's heiress and which John Lilly did she marry, and which John is Mary's father?"[2] Byrne's in-depth analysis of these questions concludes that John Lilly I must have married Mary Mallson, the daughter of Edward Mallson. The Mallson estate came to Mary (Lilly) Read, either by a lost will or deed of gift, or without record by the law of primogeniture. Byrne also concludes that Mary (Lilly) Read was the daughter of John Lilly II.[2]

Marriage and Children

Mary married c. 1688 to Robert Reade. Robert was Justice of York County, and the couple lived near Yorktown.[3]

Death and Legacy

Mary died at Yorktown, York County, Virginia Colony before her will was proved on November 20, 1722.[3]

Mary was born about 1644. She passed away in 1722.

Copy of her transcribed will can be found at: https://whiteroadresearch.blogspot.com/2018/04/the-will-of-mary-read-of-york-county.html

She mentioned slaves: an unnamed Molatto Boy, Will, and Hill, Sarah, ______lina, and others whose names are lost.

She passed away in 1722.

Though it does not connect up like that on WikiTree yet. More research needed to see what the correct relationships are.

to [email address removed] Merge Lilly-2359 and Lilly-2558 into Lilly-269 - My grandmother. Lillly-269 is correct with my family history. It's ok to merge the first two into Lilly-269.

You have my permission.
