Johannes Lymbach (1708-1769) was a German immigrant to North America and an early settler in the Colony of Pennsylvania. He was born on or before his baptismal date of 20 June 1708 to Michel Lymbach and wife Anna Catharina in Hüffenhardt, Baden, Heiliges Römisches Reich.[1]
Johannes married Maria Margaretha Listerer on 24 Feb 1734 in Hüffenhardt.[2]
A baptismal record in the Evangelical Church of Hüffenhardt, Germany shows that on 14 October 1734, an infant named Georg Friederich Lÿmbach was baptized and that his parents were Johannes (a linen weaver) and Maria Margaretha Lÿmbach.[3]
On 26 September 1753, at the approximate age of 45, Johannes and his family arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania aboard the ship ‘Brothers’, captained by William Muir. The ship embarked from Rotterdam and arrived by way of Cowes. That same day Johannes and Friederich gave their oath of allegiance to the colony.[4]
From Philadelphia, the family made its way inland and settled among the German communities of what is today Eastern Pennsylvania. By 1754 they were affiliated with the Hill Church of Berks County. In 1758 George Friederich married Anna Catherine Ritter, daughter of Paul Ritter, in Colebrookedale Township in Berks County.[5]
The Journals and Papers of David Schultze, a surveyor during the colonial period in Pennsylvania, include this: “On August 12 [1769], old Johannes Limbach fell from the barn and was killed. He was 61 years old and was buried on the 14th. Mein Leben ist abgerissen als ein Weber spuhl.”[6] If the age given is correct, Johannes' birth date was approximately 1708, and he was approximately 26 when his son Georg Friederich was born.
After Johannes' death, Georg Friederich Lÿmbach and his sons carried on Johannes' pioneer spirit by moving on to parts of the U.S. that were just opening to settlers: first to the German settlements of western North Carolina, and later to Cape Girardeau in the Territory of Missouri. Today most descendants spell the name "Limbaugh".
Some researchers include a given/middle name of Michael for him. No sources have been found to date for this.
