MOTHER OF SIX SENT FOR TRIAL. Story to Police of Betting Debts. SYDNEY, Thursday.-Vera Chappelow (32), mother of six children, tho eldest 12 and the youngest four weeks, was committed for trial on £10 bail to-day, on a charge of having broken and entered a house in Glebe, and stolen goods valued at £14, She was alleged to have told the police that she was badly in need of money, having lost in betting on horses and dog racing. In evidence Mrs. Chappelow said her husband gave her all his wages, £4, and was a good man. She had pawned his clothing to meet her betting debts. (2)

12 Aug 1938 SMH article MOTHER'S LAPSE: Vera Ferne Chappelow, mother of seven children, was bound over in the Quarter Sessions today on three charges of house-breaking. The police stated that in the commission of the crime the woman was accompanied by her 14-year-old daughter. The defendant's husband said that "temptation overcame her just before she was about to have a child. Judge White said that there might be some psychological explanation for her conduct. He ordered that £7 compensation be paid to two householders but made no order in regard to the claims for compensa- tion on behalf of the pawnbrokers with whom she pledged the goods. (3)

6 October 1938 Vera Chappelow, 32, domestic, pleaded guilty to a charge of having, at Leichhardt, broken into a dwelling house, and stolen a quantity of jewellery, clothing, and other property. It was stated that the accused had appeared before the Court in August last, and was then bound over to be of good behaviour. His Honor said that, as the offence was committed prior to August last, he would bind her over again to be of good behaviourFix this text for two years. She was released. (4)

29 June 1929 WOMAN SENT TO GAOL. MOTHER OF SEVEN. Broke Three Bonds. Vera Chappelow, 32, married, and mother of seven children, was sen- tenced by Judge Markell in the Quar- ter Sessions yesterday to 12 months' imprisonment. Chappelow had pleaded guilty to a charge of house-breaking at Lewisham. Constable Mair said that Chappelow lived with her husband and children at Leichhardt. The eldest child was 17 years and the youngest 19 months. She was a good mother. Judge Markell to Chappelow At present you are out on a good behaviour bond which was given to yon last Ortober You were then bound over to be of good behaviour for two years In August last two months previously you were allowed to go at large on the same Insl in connectoin with a house breaking charge That means that yon have aheady broken two bonds Mi Fitzgerald (Gaol Recorder) She has broken three bonds one of which will espire tomorrow The prisoner told the Judge that she had not been in the house at Lewisham for the purpose of stealing The Judge then advised her to enter a plea of not gullty I will let mv plea go as one of guilty the prisoner replied On the prisoner stating that she had noth ing further to add the Judge replied Well I am afraid i must send you to gaol It was stated that one of the good behaviour bonds granted to the prisoner had stipulated that she was to refrain from betting on horses and dogs (5)
