Biography

Clara was born in 1846, on the island of Tristan d'Acunha, in the Atlantic Ocean. Her father was an unknown seaman who had deserted from a whaling ship. Because he was unwelcome on the island, the family was isolated and allowed to become destitute. When he committed suicide, by jumping into the sea in 1850, he was buried under the name John Anderson.

A passing whaling ship, the 'Bengal' rescued Clara, her mother Catherine, and six siblings and transported them to Tasmania, Australia. They arrived in Hobart 1 Feb 1851. Clara's name is lot listed on the manifest of six children, but reports clearly indicate there were seven children.

Clara, her sister Agnes and brother James, were admitted to the Queen's Orphan School in Hobart. Clara was removed from the orphanage by her elder sister Lucinda, and her husband Robert James on 25 Feb 1857.

[1]On 3 Sep 1861, Clara married Thomas Jones, who fathered two children with Clara, before he died in 1870.

[2]Clara re-married on 23 May 1871 to Emanuel Ferdinand and as Mrs Ferdinand, attended the wedding of her mother Catherine to Charles Quinn in 1884.

Clara passed away on 5 Apr 1888

Lind-735 and Lind-212 appear to represent the same person because: Following the death of her first husband Thomas Jones in 1870, Clara re-married to Emanuel Ferdinand 23 May 1871. This is the same person. While the father James Lind should be removed because there is no supporting information, it does no harm and can be amended later.
