Biography

Jonathan Lindley, Jr. was born 8 September 1800 in Orange County, North Carolina, the son of Jonathan Lindley and Deborah Dicks, who were Quakers. He married Mary Lindley in 1821 in Washington, Indiana. They had at least ten children. Jonathan died in Orange County, Indiana in 1865.[1]

Jonathan Lindley and Mary Lindley were married on 7 December 1821 in Washington County, Indiana. Hugh McPheeters officiated.[2]

In 1850, the Lindley family lived on their farm in Paoli, Orange, Indiana. The family included Jonathan Lindley, 49, born in North Carolina, a farmer, with $3500 in real estate; his wife, Mary, 48, born in North Carolina; their children, all born in Indiana, all in school, except for the eldest one: Samuel N., 20, a farmer; Thomas, 16, a farmer; Sarah, 14; Amanda, 12; and Ruth, 7. Also living with them was a mulatto laborer, John Hatiway, 28, born in Indiana. Living nearby were two other Lindley families: 1) the household of Thomas E. Lindley, 25, Mary White, 40, her four children, Hiram Lindley, 22, and three others; and 2) James Lindley, 64, wife Rachel, four children, and a laborer.[3]

In 1860, the Lindleys lived in Paoli Township, Orange, Indiana. The household included Jonathan Lindley, 60, a farmer, with $900 in real estate and $7K ($1K?) in personal estate; his wife, Mary, 58; their daughters, Amanda, 21; and Ruth E., 17, in school. Also living with them was Conrad Brinkus, 15, a laborer, born in Germany.[4]

Jonathan Lindley, Jr., 1800-1865, is buried with his wife, two children, and other family at Old Town Cemetery, Paoli, Indiana.[5]
