Biography

In 1900, the Lindley family lived in Paoli, Paoli Township, Orange, Indiana. All members of the household were born in Indiana, except as noted. The household included Hiram Lindley, 52, born Nov. 1848, a farmer, who owned their farm without a mortgage; his wife of fourteen years, Ida J., 38, b. Feb. 1862, who had had five children, three of whom were living; their children, all in school, except the youngest one: Maud, 17, b. May 1883 (Hiram’s child from previous marriage); Lloyd, 13, b. March 1887; Herbert, 9, b. June 1891; and Almira, 6, b. Dec. 1894; and a niece, Lelia Assamher, 17, b. Illinois, a student. Living nearby were two other Lindley families:

  • Riley Lindley, 55; wife Elida,A., 43; and six children
  • Julia Lindley, 58; and nieces, Hester Strange, 43, and Bessie, 19 [1]


Harley E. Qualkinbush and Almira P. Lindley were married on 26 April 1914 on Orange County, Indiana. It was the first marriage for both parties. Harley was born on 1 November 1889 in Martin, Indiana, the son of Willard Qualkinbush and Malissa Wagner. Almira was born 1 December 1895 in Orange, Indiana, the daughter of Hiram Lindley and ____ Dillinger. [2]

In 1910, the Lindley family lived on their farm in Paoli, Indiana. They owned their farm without a mortgage. All members of the household were born in Indiana. The family included Hiram B. Lindley, 61, widowed, a farmer, whose parents were born in North Carolina; his children, Lloyd, 23, a farm laborer; Herbert, 17, farm laborer; Allie, 15; and Carl, 8, in school. [3]

Harley Qualkinbush, 50, born in Indiana, a farmer, whose real estate was valued at $1000, and who had completed the eighth grade
Allie Qualkinbush, Wife, 45, b. Indiana, completed 8th grade
Loren Qualkinbush, Son, 23, b. Indiana, a farmer, who completed 3 years of high school
Irene Qualkinbush, Daughter, 21, b. Indiana, a public school teacher, who worked 32 weeks in 1939 and earned $820, and had completed 3 years of college [6]

Almira Priscilla Lindley and Harley Ellsworth Qualkenbush were married on 26 April 1914 in Orange, Indiana. They had at least two children, daughters Irene and Helen. Almira died, aged 51, in 1946, and is buried with her husband, their daughters, and other family at Community Cemetery, Paoli, Indiana. [7] They aslso had a son, Loren Lindley Quackenbush, born in 1916. [8]
