Biography

Simon Hadley Lindley was born about 1755 in North Carolina, the son of James Lindley (1735-1779) and Mary Cox Lindley.

He married Hannah Massey about 1778. They had a son, James Lindley, b 28 Aug 1779.

The Lindley family were Quakers. James Lindley, Simon's father, was executed for treason in SC in 1779. Quakers were presumed to be Tory sympathizers because they would not support a violent revolution.

Both Simon and Hannah were killed during or perhaps immediately before the Battle of Lindley's Mill, which was fought at the mill owned by Simon's grandfather. The Quakers were noted for caring for the injured and burying the dead on both sides of the bloody conflict.

Research Notes

Teddy Chapman's research had Simon (Aaron) Lindley, no reference to Hadley as middle name.

"murdered during Revolutionary War for being a Tory. wife killed for same reason." Death dates for both were 13 Sep 1781. Place of death: "Spring Mtg House near Snow Camp, Alamance Co." This would be during the Battle of Lindley's Mill. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Lindley%27s_Mill)

Alternate dates for Simon Hadley Lindley's birth: 1753, 1758

Alternate dates for marriage to Hannah Massey: 1776

Alternate dates for birth of son James: 29 Mar 1777

There is another Simon Lindley, the uncle of this one, who also died in 1781 but in Pennsylvania (or perhaps earlier, in the 1760s per discussion on ancestry.com below)

Disambiguation of Simon Lindleys on Ancestry.com: https://www.ancestry.com/boards/surnames.lindley/703

There is a family story related there that "This Simon died 13 Sept 1781 in Orange Co. NC and tradition indicates he was killed by Patriot forces while attempting to flee after shooting his wife, whom he felt was about to betray him as loyal to the British cause." This obviously conflicts with the story that they both were shot as Loyalists.

Here is another blog post that describes the battle, perhaps more relevant to his grandfather Thomas Lindley: (http://lutherlindley.blogspot.com/2009/01/was-our-ancestor-thomas-lindley-patriot_31.html) The deaths of Simon and Hannah were not mentioned in the blog post itself but a comment at the end raises the genealogical question of the parentage of James Lindley-1468, whether he was the son of Simon Hadley Lindley and Hannah Massey, or the son of John Lindley (1747-1798) and Sarah Pyle (1750-1829). This question also cites the family story that both Simon and Hannah were murdered before the battle "for being Tories." As for James Lindley, if he was left an orphan early in life it makes sense that he might have been raised by John and Sarah Lindley afterwards. (However other genealogists state he was raised by his mother's mother and her second husband).

Based on the preponderance of the evidence available to me, my plan is to add Hannah Massey as Simon's wife, and add James Lindley as their son who married Susanna Stout and moved to Indiana. James and Susanna's son John Lot Lindley married Mary McMullen and later Mary McGill, and was the father of my ancestor Sarah Lindley, who married Daniel Nordyke. Bogue-687 17:54, 16 May 2020 (UTC)

also, Rosalie Maffett Bogue interviews with Carl W. Bogue Sr. about family history ca. 1996. "Sarah or Hannah Lindley #19, had parents who came from England - father was Aaron Lindley - and because they were Tories, or English sympathizers, they were "murdered" in the Revolutionary War. (This possibly came from an obituary)." (This refers to Sarah Lindley Nordyke, Lindley-1474, Simon's great-granddaughter, and was the starting point for Teddy Chapman's research.)
