Biography

Philo LINDLEY was born [1] 17 Dec 1814 in Oxford, New Haven Co., Connecticut, United States.

Philo was born in Derby, New Haven, Connecticut, the son of Curtis Lindley and Sebra Holbrook. Philo married Cordelia Merritt in 1844 in LaSalle, Illinois. They had three children. [2]

In 1850, Philo Lindley, 33, born in Connecticut, a circuit court clerk with $1300 in personal estate; and his wife, Cordelia, 28, born in New York, lived with William Bell, 33, his wife, and four others in Ottawa, LaSalle, Illinois. [3]

In 1860, the Lindley family lived in Ottawa, LaSalle, Illinois. The household included Philo Lindley, 45, a County court clerk, with $9000 in real estate and $5000 in personal estate; his wife, Cordelia, 38, born in New York; their children, all born in Illinois, George, 9, in school; Philo, 7, in school; and Laura, 4. Also living with them were Rose York, 22, b. Ireland; Susie J.M. Davis, 24, b. NY; Louisa P. Jencks, 24, b. NY; and John Kohn, 14, b. Germany, in school. [4]

Philo Lindley served in the Union Army during the Civil War, with Companies F and S, 53rd Regiment, Illinois Infantry. His rank in was 1st Lt, Quartermaster; his rank out was Regimental Quartermaster. [5]

Among the many duties and engagements that the 59th Illinois engaged in up to the day of Lindley’s death were (1862) Battle of Shilo, Tennessee; Siege of Corinth, Mississippi; Battle of Hatchie’s River/Metamora; (1863) Siege of Vicksburg; (1864) Allatoona Pass, Georgia, June 8-July 13. The unit was stationed there building fortifications. (Lindley was killed, or died, in Allatoona on 25 June 1864). Throughout the entirety of the war, the 53rd Illinois lost 88 killed or mortally wounded, and 139 to disease. [6]

Philo Lindley, 1814-1864, the son of Curtis Lindley and Sabra Holbrook, was killed during the Civil War, serving with the Union Army, 53rd Illinois Infantry. He is buried with his wife, Cordelia, and two sons, George L. and Phil M. Lindley, at Ottawa Avenue Cemetery, Ottawa, Illinois. [7]
