Biography

Walter (Lindsay) de Lindsay is a member of Clan Lindsay.

Walter was the son of William Lindsay and Alicia Lancaster[1]

He was Lord of Lamberton, Molesworth, Sheriff of Berwickshire, and Justiciar of Lothian, inherited a vast property in Lancashire and Westmoreland (including part of what is known as the Lake District), in right of his mother, and paid a fine of two marks of gold to be respited from taking knighthood against his will, and he further delayed it to make a pilgrimage to the shrine of St. James.(15-4) He was sixteen years old, 31 Henry III. He granted a charter of liberties to the burgh of Warton in Lancashire ,(16-4) had licence to make a pilgrimage to Spain 1260, and was ambassador to England 1265.( His wife's name was Christian, who was married, secondly, in Scotland, to Walter de Percy of Kildale, as attested by King Alexander III. 23 September 1274.

This great baron died on All Souls Day 1271,( 4-5) leaving issue:—

  • 1. William, his heir, and perhaps two others.
  • 2. Gilbert(5-5) thought to be identical with Gilbert de Molesworth,(6-5). That he had a son of this name is shown by a record of William his brother.[2]
  • 3. Walter of Parva Lamberton.(7-5) Probable ancestor of the Lindsays of Thurston.(8-5)
  • 4. Margaret, wife of Sir David de Lindsay.
  • 5. Alicia, wife of John Comyn of Badenoch and Tynedale.(9-5) "

I'm taking photos of pages in the book my grandfather wrote, 'Molesworth', and uploading here the pages relevant to Walter. It appears to me to be the same person, although there are some contradicting details, which is also noted in a post below.

Further note: The Walter listed in the book pictured above, should probably be the son of this Walter, because he was brothers with William and Gilbert. So this Walter who doesn't have a profile yet, is said to have been with his brother Gilbert, fighting with Edward I in 1270 in the 8th Crusade to Jerusalem. It is said that he changed his name to Molesworth, after the township he was living in. Apparently this was fairly common with Scottish knights, who had sided with the English King, and wanted to show loyalty to the English, during the time that the Edward I was going to war with Scotland. This also accounts for both Gilbert and Walter changing their coat-of-arms away from a very Scottish design. Evidently, in showing loyalty, they were trying to separate themselves from the Lindsay connection, and connection to the Scottish royals.

I guess this text is a copy/paste from a published work, the Scots Peerage. We should cite it.

This profile is a bit of a mix up and needs urgent attention !! Some wifes shown here died before he was born. His profile seems to have been merged with his great grandfather and is now caught in a loop. Help please to sort this out. Thanks
